General Advice - Career Decisions

    Hi all,

So.. facing, what i would call a "career-decision" crisis or crossroads maybe?

I am 22.. in the I.T Industry.. for my age, i have considerable amount of experience in my field of work and good exposure working with various blue-chip companies over the years. I have moved from support positions, to more project management over the last while, though i rather remain technical.

Moving in to more of the IT PM side of things kinda happened by chance and wasn't really my absolute decision, though i do not regret it, the experience has only added to my CV.

I have been on the jobs market for some time, but have just since started a new job. This particular job is again, geared towards IT Project Management. I fear i may have made a bad career choice? As ultimately i wanted to move away from Project Management and back in to the more mainstream I.T roles.

I work for a managed services company, which means i am contracted out to various different high profile clients. I recently just found out that i am wanted for a project with a very well known -tech-giant- company. For the purposes of my NDA id rather not name said company, but suffice to say, everyone and anyone knows who they are.

The role is not at all technically based. in fact there is little to no element of IT involved. however, thats how the company i work for, works. I don't really have a choice, a project has been one, so they need to send someone out.

I guess my big issue here is, this job doesn't really serve my overall interests and future career plans. It isnt IT related, and i dont see myself doing this type of job in the future.

Any suggestions as to what i should/could do. I only started the job, so wouldn't really be in a position to say something i dont think?

Am i being stupid about it all? Maybe i need to look at the bigger picture RE exposure to some great clients.. and learning stuff RE Project Management?

any and all advice appreciated, i guess what i need to is some criticism. Perhaps im being silly? Perhaps i am not looking at the bigger picture?

bottom line is.. i am not really that happy with my job.. it doesn't add to my future career plans.

I stick with it for gaining some experience in the long run might be worth having in the future for more technical jobs.
Its understandable you rather stick with what you are interested in but no harm getting out of your comfort zone be all rounder not just with IT skills. Stick it out for as long as your contract is and take it from there but if its not fulfilling your career aspirations maybe leave it after a few months as future employers might be wondering why you left the job after a short time but then again no point being in a job you don't like or not happy with but if you think its not fulfilling your career aspirations then change to a job that might have PM with a more technical role or go back to a role you be happier in but most people don't stay in a specific role for long unless its a job for life or going up the career ladder in same company!

Thanks for your advice! -- I guess I will stick it out for a short period of time an see how it goes, ultimately I can see myself moving on to more of what I am interested in.

I guess my only concern would be, am i burning bridges? - i found out through the 'grapevine' that i was hired over 5 other candidates, and that it took them a while to come to a decision. I'd hate to ruin my reputation and burn the bridges with the company and any of there clients.

I am not happy though, i dont find enjoyment in my job. I am not in my "Element" as it where, and it doesnt feel like i am in a job that will eventually end up in something i like

    Robert
