Hi I am considering applying for this course this year. Can anyone who is doing or has done the course give me an insight into it. Is it a difficult course and what are job opportunities like for its graduates?

    Hey there,

I studied it in 2004-2008, going into Environmental Plant Biotech for my 2nd-4th years. Is it difficult? Well, I found the chemistry, physics and maths in the first year very difficult as I had taken ordinary level maths for the Leaving. In contrast, I had taken Geography and Biology for the Leaving and have always been interested in Geology so those modules were quite straightforward. I liked how you could pick a focus after the 1st year, I went in sure I was going to be a geologist, but found plant science so interesting I ended up taking that and now I'm a plant breeder.

Job opportunities are insanely varied, it depends on the stream you pick in 2nd year. I know an exploration geologist, teachers, research scientists, quality control officer in a pharmaceutical company, a zookeeper, ecologist, environmental planner, landscape conservation specialist, oceanographer...that's just my facebook friends :P basically a wide range of geological and biological careers.

Happy to answer any other questions :)
