If you tax it online then all you need is any insurance policy number and the insurance company name that goes with that policy number. It doesn't have to be current or yours for that matter as the motor tax website has no way of validating it. If you want to go into a motor tax office then afaik they may ask you for your insurance details. Haven't been in a motor tax office in years so that bit might be out of date.

given you wont have it on the road until it's insured, why don't you wait for 1st Feb to tax it? you could SORD it for January, you get 10 days to do this from date of purchase

When taxing online insurance firm and policy number appears to be mandatory information and therefore you could easily assume they're checking the details but in fact they do not. Not sure what happens if you enter 'Bosco' as your policy number - maybe just maybe they have some rudimentary checks on what may or may not be a valid policy number format - but it might just work. You get the idea.

There is no check on those insurance details, you can put in any one of the companies and for policy no 123456 will work fine. I have insurance but don't keep the details to hand so enter any old number when doing it online.
