So the bags were delayed by a day over christmas when we flew KLM. They gave us both 25€ vouchers for our inconvenience towards our next flights.

So called today to use one of them (have to do so over phone), completed the booking and was told i would get details in email what to do next.

So the email says I have to post the physical voucher (even though I already provided the individual voucher code) to them in Amsterdam by registered post within 24hrs or I pay full price. Its €5.82 to send registered letter to Amsterdam...

    I know its still €19 compensation...but what a scheme....

I got $150 in cash from KLM when my bag was delayed 3 days in Peru about a decade ago. Were you at "home" when your bag was delayed? I suppose that might impact on how inconvenienced you were. The voucher thing seems mad.

Show them this from the EU Air Passenger Rights site:
    Lost or damaged registered luggage
    Checked-in luggage

If your registered luggage is lost, damaged or delayed, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline, up to about €1,220

Exception - if damage is caused by an inherent defect in the baggage itself.

    Hand baggage (including personal items)

The carrier is liable if it was responsible for the damage.

Make sure to file your claim within 7 days of receiving your luggage (or 21 days if your luggage was delayed).

If you wish to pursue other legal action, you must do so within 2 years of the date your luggage arrives.

If you are travelling with expensive items, you might be able - for a fee - to obtain a compensation limit higher than €1,223 by making a special advance declaration to the airline - at the latest when you check in. Though the best thing is really to take out private travel insurance.

There is no standard form for the special declaration. It is up to the airlines to choose the type of form they provide.

no we were away when bags didnt arrive..it was only 23hrs delay...not a huge inconvenience to be honest for us, but to receive €25 and it costs €5.82 to redeem...is what I took umbrage at..

They'll give you compensation for the essentials you had to purchase.

Although I received the money via bank transfer, I wouldn't accept a voucher as I don't really fly KLM very often.

Did you send copies of the receipts for the items you had to purchase?

hmm and i thought they were buying us off with the vouchers...so it seems they are an additional "we are sorry" to being able to claim compensation. As mentioned there was no major inconvenience for us as we travelling to a family member. So I guess on the balance of things, it may be a silly system they have but as it is as a purely "sorry" gesture, I shouldn't complain really...Thanks for the links guys.
