Want faster Broadband, Try calling them!

Just thought I would share my experience with everyone in case it benefits anyone else!

Living in rural Ireland i guess I should be thankful to be able to receive 3.5mbs, but like everyone else I watch in envy at all those moaning about fibre being slow at 40mbs etc! :D

Anyhow this morning I contacted by broadband provider (UTV) and asked them was if it was possible to receive anything faster or was anything planned for the near future.

He told me to wait for a few moments whilst he did something on their system, 5 minutes later I have broadband speeds of just over 9 mbs!

Im in heaven, jumping from 3mbs to 9 mbs in just 5 minutes!

So if your not happy with your current speed give your provider a call, you never know!

Magnet did a similar thing for me. It's strange how they don't do it for ya when you sign up.

I'm four miles from the exchange and 2MB is the best the line can do. Calling Eircom won't magically move my house closer to the exchange.

You can always ring Sky and ask them to test your line. They will quickly tell you where you really stand. Personally I would'nt believe anything Eircom would tell me. They've been conning people for so long that it has now become the norm with them:mad:

The speed and quality of DSL is diminished the farther away you are from the exchange. This why people living in rural Ireland get the short end of the stick. There is no magic SKY or any other ISP can do to fix this just by calling them. If whatever ISP out there were to increased my speed to just 3Mb my line would become unstable and I'd get a lot of disconnects. Upgrading the infrastructure to efibre is all they can do for those living in rural Ireland but, the roll out is slow going and even then it's limited by distance. There is hope though. Fixed wireless (not mobile BB) is an alternative to DSL and is what I have now. I'm getting 20Mb download and 1Mb upload and thats with great pings and no network congestion. The only thing you need to look out for though is that the company you go with aren't cowboys and that you have a good line of site. Luckily for me both are good.

@uncle_sam - are you in Cork city or county? I have relatives there (North Cork) who are on fixed wireless, but have 1Mb or 5Mb download and a ridiculous cap. What network are you using?

    Yikes,

So in other words, your quality of service is probably going to go downhill.

Everyones line can carry maybe 4-5 meg more. However the quality of the line may not be able to handle it.

http://www.novabroadband.ie/w/ I've been using them for the last few months now after my DSL line went to the dogs. It was totally unusable after 4pm til 1am because of network congestion. Nova's been brilliant though. After so many years of paying for and putting with crappy DSL, I finally have really good broadband.

    What ISP are they using?

    Can you post a speedtest?

    Can you post a speedtest?

And, that's with my wife in one room streaming netflix and my son in his watching youtube. Which with a ping of 12ms leaves me plenty to do some gaming if I wanted. I could only dream of doing that before with the DSL I had.

Happy days my friend. That's top of the pops.

To be fair I think that some rural posters who think they are the only getting a bad service need to realise that a lot of urban dwellers get the shaft also. Up until a month a go I was on a 12 meg dsl line that was contended. After 4 I'd be lucky to get 2 meg. Before that I was on a 3meg line.

Now I'm a bit better. Thank good for upc!!

Just for fun I'll post the speedtest I get from my Eircom DSL line (I still under contract until march with ehttp://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3248966135]3248966135.png[/URL]ircom).

This is suppose to be a 2MB line. And, no one in my house is on it.

Incredible that they can force you to honour the contract with that s~#te.

    Up to 2meg!!

I went to buy a car yesterday and was told it has 4 wheels but I might only get 1 and a half when driving it.

I beg to differ, 24 hours of improved speeds and my quality has been fantastic. Ive been monitoring my speeds and they have remained steady and fast. No issues what so ever.

Obviously in my case my speed was being restricted for some reason, the reason I started this thread was to alert people to the situation in case they were in the same boat as me.

I have had broadband for over 3 years at speeds of 3mb, I always presumed this was the fastest I could receive, but one phone call yesterday blew that presumption out of the water and my speed is now hitting 9mbs.

I agree that this isnt a magic bullet for everyone, but others like me could be having their broadband restricted for some reason and be able to get better speeds.

My advice is to call your provider and see if there is anything they can do, you may be lucky like me and see increased speeds or you may be stuck with what you have, but unless you pick up the phone you wont know eitherway.

Faster speeds may have become available in your area in recent times and they never notified you is a possible reason.
