MF 4355 Lift Pump Filter

    Hi,

I bought a 2003 MF 4355 with low hours last November, and I have had problems with the engine running a bit rough, and I get a lot of diesel chokes. I contacted the guy I bought it off and he said there was a filter on the top of the lift pump which was most likely blocked. I took out the filter and it was completely clogged. I get the feeling that this is going to be a regular occurrence. I will probably have to clean the filter every time I fill the tank..

Just wondering if other MF 4300 owners have come across this problem. The filter is incredibly fine. With this filter I don't know what the other diesel filters on the tractor are for... Older Massey's don't have this filter, except for the MF 35 which had a bowel filter under the lift pump.

Older masseys have a similar filter.
300 and 600 series are exactly as you describe and older 100 and 200 series have the filter in the tank before the lift pump.

If you need to clean it every time you fill then you have dirty diesel/ poor fuel hygiene. Do you filter diesel when you are filling?

Maybe previous owner is responsible and there is still dirt in the tank.

Yes, you are right - I forgot about that filter. Yes, I think you are probably right. The diesel is probably not clean enough. I have had to resort to using cans to fill the tractor instead of a proper diesel tank. (The reason for cans is that I have had an entire tank of diesel stolen, so I wasn't about to fill it again until I figured out a way to secure the tank). I have had problems with cans before, so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause of the problem.

Cans can be a problem alright, do you at least use a filtered funnel?

On the subject of diesel theft, we recently had diesel stolen from the tanks of two tractors. We had only filled them to the brim one evening. Both tractors were empty the next morning.

Have you thought about using one of these?

It would be no harm to take off the tank and wash it out bcos if theres dirt in there and the tractor goes low you will only be sucking up more dirt clogging the filter and cause more problems up the line. Also when your filling your diesel use a funnel with a strainer in it and keep it in a bag tied secure so that no other dirt or dust get on it while its not in use.

I have a 4355 here for a few years. I had the same experience as you tractor got really low on power too I finally found the little filter the same as you. I had to get a new clutch so I took off the fuel tank at that time and cleaned it out. I take out the little filter every few hundred hours to check it. There isn't a whole pile of power in it though i was disappointed with power output ,no where near as much torque as the older masseys, but they are a lot more comfy though

Try to suck out remainder of diesel regularly if taking off tank is not an option straight away . if you have a vacuum pump use a steel drum you can vacuumise it,it doesn't need strength to withstand pressure to suck out dsl ,just solder on two 1/2inch pipes and attach rubber hoses ,I would use an anti-fungal diesel additive as well, water gets added with cans causing severe damage, it's unbelievable what the inside of pumps damaged in this way look like ,and costly
