All depends on how good you are at haggling

Have you a trade in or is it a straight deal. I got a vag car recently, list was almost €41k. Got it for €37k on a straight deal.

Sorry forgot to say no trade in.

There you go, it's worth selling your car privately if possible.

The cash you get for a private sale would be far greater than any trade in you get on from a dealer (In my cases in my experience anyway) Remember they need to flip or scrap you car, and that has costs which they have to cover in the 'trade in' price. The upshot of trading in is you don't have to worry about not having a car / stress of dealing with the jokers on DoneDeal etc.

And forget 10%. Thats a mental discount. 5%, some mats, decent tax length and full tank of petrol would be far more realistic. Anyway, why are you considering a car that you can only afford 90% of the price tag?

There are no discounts set in stone. Either you get one or you don't.
Shop around a few dealers, it's a buyer's market. Make a lower but reasonable offer per car.
See what happens. If you don't like it walk away and go to another dealer.

While you may be somewhat correct, you would buy a lot of mats, tax and petrol for €2k.
I was lucky this time as I was keeping the car and buying a new one,so didn't have to deal with he "how much is the tax on this" or"this yoke has too many Kim's on it" brigade.

Its my first time buying without a trade in and I can afford the full amount, just looking for advise on what I can expect to save.

i've bought my last three cars on straight cash sales, all new cars.

Current car is a Skoda was listed at €34000 and I paid €30000
The previous car was a MKV GTi and with options was listed at €42000 and I paid €38000
the car before that was a Seat and listed at €16500 and I paid €15000.

that ranges from 12% - 9%. To be fair, each and every time took a fair bit of haggling and being smart about how I dealt with the dealers.

I doubt you'll get 10% on a new GTI. Will be a factory order, and they are in demand so dealers don't need to pass on all their margin.

5% - 7.5% would be a decent discount off the retail price, and try to screw them down to €600 for delivery.

Do the rounds of volkswagen dealers till you get the best deal usually outside of Dublin . I always go to Commons cars in Navan got E1800 extra for my trade in over Western motors in Drogheda. Bradys in Arva Cavan or Mullingar volkswagen worth a call. The guys in Commons told me they exceeded their targets for January so were able to give more. Will you go for the performance pack ?????

Where is it suggested that the OP can only afford 90% of the price tag? He simply came onto boards to seek opinions and he gets hit with a negative comment like that. It's a real sign of the way the motors forum has evolved recently.

OP I commend your choice and best of luck with the haggling. There was a YouTube piece discussed here recently where an American guy went round to all the dealers within a large radius and gave them each an ultimatum that he was going to buy a car today and would be going with the lowest bid. It only really works when buying a brand new car and no trade in. He claimed he got some really impressive discounts.

I think you will do well to get 10% on a car in such short supply buts it's definitely worth a try.

" and being smart about how I dealt with the dealers" can you expand upon that:D

On one of the deals my sister in law was buying a new motor at the same time with the same brand and managed to get a little extra discount based on ordering the two cars together.

Another was to have the car speced and literally contact all dealer promising an order that day for the lowest quote (ended up with huge variations)

Where are you based? I don't imagine alot of discounts will be given out on the new gti, fairly new and high in demand, unless you buy an ex demo which some of the larger dealers currently have on.

If it was me I'd go in the morning of the last day of the working month :) I'm sure VW will want to be ahead of Hyundai at month end.....

Excellent advice. The problem there is the car would have to be in stock in order to register it.
