Hey folks, looking for some advice on a build i plan on ordering in the next few weeks. I've got most of what i want (i think), but would like to get the price down a bit without sacrificing much, if possible. The only thing i definitely don't want to change is the case, as i'm a fan of the Fractal Design cases.

    Intel Core i5-4670 Box, LGA1150 - €189.01
    ASRock H87 Performance, Sockel 1150, ATX - €87.14
    ARCTIC COOLING CPU-Kühler Freezer i30 - €30.73
    8GB G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-10667U CL9 - €68.66
FRACTAL DESIGN Define R4 Black Pearl - €86.76
    Corsair CS Series Modular CS650M 650W ATX 2.3 - €82.86
    Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X Revision 2.0, 3GB DDR5, PCI-Express - €269.90
    WD Blue 1TB SATA 6GB/s 9,5mm - €66.64

    Total - €901.70

    Any advice?

Psu is expensive can get a 700w for this price. A 550 will do as long as it has the connections for the card.

Don't need the cooler as you are not overclocking. Stock one will do fine for now.

280x's are in big demand mostly due to mining so there isn't many to choose from. I've an Asus 280x top which I paid €275 for in November and am on the lookout for a second one but the demand is just too high and prices have increased since I bought mine. Might be worth your while to look up on Nvidia cards.

Yeah, they seem to be sold out pretty much everywhere. What would be the equivalent Nvidia card? I've always gone AMD, so not at all familiar with them. If i don't go for the Nvidia, i might just throw another €50 for the r9 290.

Gtx 770 is the equivalent to a 280x. Is a good card but ,I gotta say that as I have one :D has shadow play if that interests you at all.

Would be worth the extra 50, for an r9 290.

Ok, decision making time. Definitely ordering it this week (got my tax back finally), but still not sure about the card. Gtx 770 or r9 280x? Most sites similar enough, but will either benefit more from Mantle? And would one of them be better if i decided to get a 2nd card at some stage?

Also, would Hardwareversand build the pc even if i don't include a gpu? They are out of stock of the 280x, so i may have to buy it somewhere else.

Not sure if nvidia be adopting mantle to be honest. It's an AMD gig.

as both are same price now ,before mantle I'd choose 770 over 280x as nvidia had better driver support.

Seems nowadays mantle is the deciding factor and the main reason for the shortage in amds line up..

Hwvs will build without Gpu no problem.

Can anyone tell me what the difference between these two cards are? Just trying to figure out if there's a reason why the 2nd card is the only R9 280x that's seems to always be in stock.

You don't get all the extra wires in the box, like sli/Crossfire cables n stuff

Ah ok, that's grand then. Not going to sli/crossfire for now, so is there anything else i would need to buy?

    You went through Geizhals?

Do it you will knock 25 euro off that build.

I know the parts you picked PSU is 61 , case 83
    CPU 194.93, mobo 74.91

You can also pick up a crucial ssd 120 gig. 59 but I like evo if you are not tight on your budget stick with it.

No actually, didn't try putting it through Geizhals. Will take a look at that later today. Cheers.

Actually, is Geizhals just an alternative site to Hardwareversand? Or is it linked in some way?

It is a discount site. You literally put the part you are choosing in the search bar example I5 blah blah.

Click on the part, you will see a list of shops when you scroll down. click hardwareversand from the list.

Ah cool. Will try that. Can you still have HWVS build the machine? No worries if not, as i'm happy doing it myself if needed.

    Cheers.

Posted this in Comp / Tech already, but might get more luck here. So i got my new pc setup, and it's brilliant...except for one thing.

My mouse cursor has gone huge after playing Planetside 2. Not 100% sure it happened right after i launched the game, but it's stuck like this now. It's not an accessibility option and it's nothing in the mouse settings in the control panel. The below screenshots show the cursor, beside a regular sized Start button. It also stays huge in Diablo 3 for example, and is bigger than the D (in Diablo) when the game loads. Running at 1080p (desktop and ingame)

Oddly enough, if i turn on pointer trails or shadows, it returns to regular size. But both of them are kind of annoying, so i'd like to just find a fix.

    Anyone any ideas?

Bios update. Get in touch with asrock tech support. Explain to them.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Yeah, i did a BIOS update already (using the Instant Flas feature to download it automatically). It's on v2.50 atm. I can't remember if that was before or after the mouse issue happened.

Can you roll back the bios update?
