On separate thread saw a guy recommending seaweed licks. Don't know the science but ringworm is a pain

Its a Laurel bush you need to hang. Not Holly or Rhododendron.
My vêt would not give me any meds just hang Laurel. Works well.

I used these minerals last year and worked well.

Also doubling the amount of minerals they are getting is supposed to do the same. I also saw holly being hung over feedlots in France. They said it was the male holly they used. I still have all the holly that was used at Christmas stored in the shed just in case!

Didn't have it for years then up it pops, in sheds that hadn't cattle in them for 20 years. Only timber in the sheds roof, every thing else if concrete or steel. Clean out and spray with soregen every year, still comes back the following year. Hanging Holly at the moment.

We hang holly here as well, we have English farmer friends that call over now and again and they reckon hanging the holly is close to voodoo :D

Hadn't heard of hanging laurel or holly. Normally use iodine, which works, even if it takes a while. Got ringworm from treating a claf about 2 years ago - was so sick with it for a few days.

We'd always use gloves when treating animals for ringworm and such conditions...
But, don't you hate that the instant you start handling them your face gets itchy !! Resisting rubbing it is important... Brother got a small spot of ringworm on his face last year.. into doctor quickly and it was cleared up in 4-5 weeks..

    Nasty stuff !!

    Mod Warning

Burned oil is carcenogenic and it causes cancer. It's illegal to use it on animals. Please don't put it on your cattle or recommend that it be put on cattle. Use iodine if you wish, or buy Imaverol.

Hi all. First post on here. Unfortunately this thread also impacts me! Have a handful of weanlings with ringworm. Before applying iodine for example do you need to brush off the 'crust' from around eyes etc. What kind of brush would you use? Thanks!

    Nope..
Ee just sprayed it on directly..
Repeat as often as is convenient..

Cheers bbam. Really don't want a dose of it myself - especially as we have young kids at home and would be afraid of passing it on. Is there any vaccine for ringworm? Thought I saw somewhere that there was but maybe not available here.

There is but you'll find the vet won't prescribe it unless its out of control throughout your herd and animals are in discomfort..

We had been free from ringworm for about 20 years until 2009 and it resurfaced - probably bought in.
Its only now seeming to abate, all animals clear for the moment, but the Iodine spray is at the ready, treat early and treat often is the motto here... leave it an see how it goes isnt advised.

Get a half inch paint brush and use it to apply iodine. That is what I do when it is around their upper and lower eyelids. You can use a tongs to hold their heads. Best to use it every day or at least every second day, its a pain in the arse but it is does work.

Over the feed barrier is the only place I have seen it been hung. Just a couple of foot of a branch was all. I wouldn't be one to follow superstitions but it does seem to work.

We hang it over the cattle as in the middle of the pen
