Looking for a replacement usb rain seal for my edge 500. Has anyone seen them for sale anywhere or have a dead garmin for parts?

    Thanks

Haven't seen these for sale. The cover on my Garmin came off a good while back, I used to just cover it with electrical tape. The one time I didn't, I got caught in a downpour at the Sally Gap and the Garmin died

Sadly, my Garmin Edge 500 was fatally injured in an accident in November.
However, the USB cover remains intact.
    You are welcome to it.
There is a problem. I don't know how to take the cover off, without damaging it.
I opened the back of the Garmin, but I can't see, how to get at the retaining part of the cover.
If somebody can give me directions, I'll open up the corpse again.
If I can get it sorted, I'll post it to you F.O.C.

Lost the usb cover from my edge 500 last Saturday. Went out yesterday and got caught in heavy rain. Now my laptop will not pick up the garmin even though its working fine while on the bike. I'd say its fried too ):

Put it in a cup and cover it with rice, leave it for 48hrs, it will remove all the moisture, if it still doesn't work after that then the pcb has shorted and it's junk.

Also try sucking the moisture out with your vacuum cleaner, using the smallest fitting that you have. This worked for me with an expensive digital camera:).

    Eamonnator/Codie,

Thanks for the kind offers. Eamonnator I'll send you a PM.

The usb cover should pull off easily, it's just held by two little pieces of rubber.

That was simple. I thought, I'd have to operate from inside.
    I have it off.
    I'll send PM now.

When it is absolutely lashing down I just wrap my Garmin 500 in some cling film and pull it tight. I then just twist it on to the holder on my stem in the normal way. It works for me as an extra layer of protection because I don't really trust the USB cover on it.

Can I be rude and kinda hijack this thread. Does anyone have a black/red 500 with the brain blown. I have a blue/grey one but my new bike colours are red/black. Just throwing it out there so I might be able to do a brain transplant. Thanks.

My bikes are all black/stealth and I was only thinking today if someone would swap with me for a black/red one. But if you google "garmin 500 silicon cover" ebay and the likes seems to have something that might do the job. Not really finished researching yet though.

On a side note if you lose something small for your garmin they tend to be quite nice and send you it FOC.

@Unknown Soldier-cheers for that. Have one of those silicon covers but thought that there might be a black/red not working computer going. The cover is grand and all but..........I'm a cyclist lol

Pity. Mine suffered internal and external injuries. Black carbon laminate is damaged.

I've been without a rain cover for about a year. The connection to my mac is now shaky and erratic, but I can usually wiggle it to connect. I thought the rain cover design looked weak when I got it. Pity they did not have a better design for this.

Similar thing happened to mine a bit over a year ago. I sent to back to Garmin and they replaced it, no questions asked. It was sill within a year of purchase, I don't know when you got yours but no harm seeing if Garmin will replace or repair. Best thing about getting a new one was that I got two extra mounts for nothing.

Get a bit of rubber (maybe from an old tube) and attach it with a couple of layers of electrical tape. Bit of a pain but it will keep the water out. I would cover the rubber bit with electrical tape anyway in wet conditions.

If willing to give DIY a try why not give Sugru a go? Should definitely be able to form a new plastic cover from it that would be up to the job.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I accidentally ripped the rubber use cover off my Garmin 500 and I'm having a problem getting it back on. There are two rubber prongs that sit into two holes in the case. One has popped in fine but the other one refuses to sit properly.
Is there a trick to fixing this?
    Thanks

Emailed Garmin customer care recently to see if it was still possible to get a USB cover for an Edge 705. The answer was yes and once they had my address, they posted one out FOC. Fitting it was a bit fiddly as the original rubber leg had broken off in the socket. Got some of it out with a needle, trimmed the new one a bit and superglued it on. Seems to be working fine for now.

There is some light corrosion on the contacts from previous wettings but it still connects well. I gather the real no no is plugging in the cable when the socket is still wet as that allows moisture past the inner seal and into the PCB.
