The pain of mesh!

Hello! I'd like to raise the arguement of mesh vs polycarbonate. I'm sure it's been argued out before, but Technology has seemed to move on in the last few years, so lets have another crack at it!

I personally despise mesh, it's too dark and unclear. I find myself constantly missing camoflauged targets, especially in wooded areas.

I made the move to mesh bolle goggles through process of elimenation, closed goggles fogged up too much, so I used glasses for a long time... Until a bb snuck in at a funny angle and hit my eye.

So I ask this; What do you use, if you use polycarbonate? Does it fog up on you? Is there good all round visibility? I sweat a fair bit so fog is a big problem, do you experience similar issues?

    Feedback appreciated as always!

I have to agree with you Tim, I like mesh for the anti fogging properties but when properly hunting for someone in a shaded area / forest etc, then yeah it get's annoying.

I went for the bolle clear lasses and amber ones for forest, yeah they do fog up but once you get a decent anti fog agent to use on them "cat crap etc "
then they are worth the inconvience. Depends on what you carry and what role you play for your team etc or whatever the site conditions lay out for you.
I'm sure others have come across better quality clear lenses and proper their own opinion.
All I can say is if you get a decent anti fog to go with your eyewear, it does improve your natural eye comfort, but expect it to fog during some part of your day.

I use both. I find the mesh good although I find it annoying when it starts to get dark so I switch to the clear goggles. I find the mesh better in the forest as long as it isn't too dark. I find the sun is less blinding through the mesh and there doesn't seem to be as big a diffference between light and dark areas as it darkens everything and I find my eyes have to adjust less when looking/going between dark and bright areas.

My goggles don't fog too much once I move a small bit every now and then. They do tend to fog if I wear a Balaclava with them.

Don't forget guys. One of the best anti fog solutions is washing up liquid and elbow grease. Do it well and you will have clear lenses for hours.

never understood why they didn't make the mesh out of see through plastics? like combine the clarity of normal goggles with mesh..

I thought that too, but then realised they'd probably distort the image a lot, and probably a lot weaker too!

Could be an integrity issue. Or manufacturing costs were too high. Plastic is not easy to work with and can involve a long and costly r&d cycle to reach production standards.

I switched from meshed Bollés to ESS ICE and the difference in visibility is unbelievable. I clean the ICEs with the no-fog cloth that came with them and they don't fog up on me unless I exhale directly on to them and even then it clears up in a few seconds. They do have small gaps around temples and cheekbones but so did my Bollés.

I did always use glasses, but after getting a stray bb in the eye I went to fully enclosed mesh goggles. Hate them though :/

ESS have a kit to seal those gaps but I didn't bother getting it.

http://shop.dyepaintball.com/dye_am/i4-goggle-system-black.html Anyone have any experience with these? These look right up my street in terms of protection and visibility.

Had several pairs of Bolle glasses and despite the hype, they all fogged up to the point I couldn't see a guy standing ten feet in front of me. Tried anti fog solutions and none of them worked a damn. Have recently bought a mesh pair to try out this weekend after my brother (who has mesh goggles) swore he'd never go back to glasses after using the mesh at a skirmish. He sweats more than me but he had no issues with fogging unlike me.

Got a pair of clear bolle goggles as i was told they were great and never fog well that was all wrong so a friend of mine gave me a tip on how to remove the lens and replace them with speaker mesh(metal). They are great i find the mesh easier to see through(sounds strange but i do) and there alot more comfortable than the plastic framed mesh goggles.I some times use glasses and if i do i use bob heath anti fog that i used years ago when i had a motorbike and its brilliant.

I'm now using a pair of Swiss Eye Raptor glasses that are for sale on AirsoftEire, they are fantastic, even for a prescription glasses user as I can just pop in the inserts and job done. The clearance between the glass and face is less than a 6mm BB on my face anyway so I don't think I'll be getting any in the eye.

They can also survive a shotgun blast so they can definitely stand up to a BB.

Have you used them in-game yet? im interested in a pair myself and was wondering if there was much fogging?

I use Bolle X1000 OTG (designed to be worn over glasses) and once i ripped the bit of mesh that was on the top vents, i have never had an issue with fogging. Even when just standing around waiting for the next game. And those who use glasses with goggles, know that it seems to cause extra fogging.

Given that the "lens" part is further out to allow room for the glasses, it may reduce fogging for those who don't wear glasses. Let me know when your next going to be at LAC Timmy and i'll give them to Andy if he's going to be there, if you want to try them out.

I've used them in a CQB game and an outdoor game. The glasses themselves don't fog but sometimes my prescription lenses do if I'm wearing too much face protection/something in the way. Can't recommend them enough to be honest. The most they fogged for was about 30 seconds too.
