We are going skiing for a week in February. I have bought this midlayer already:
    http://www.columbia.com/Women%27s-Shimmer-Flash%E2%84%A2-Jacket/WL5497,default,pd.html

Myself and hubby are into walking/hiking so we have a few bits but as we are only going for a week I really don't want to spend a fortune buying loads of stuff so looking for advice on what should be the priorities.

I have a couple of base layers already from North Face and Helly Hensen. I also have a North Face summit series thermal top and a softshell cycling jacket so between them I think I am covered - any tips or opinions on this?

Where I am really stuck is for something waterproof (obviously over the midlayer above).....any recommendations? I am not near a TK Maxx and won't be so it's online only and as I said I don't want to spend a fortune.
    I also need ski gloves.

I have a pair of ski pants that I got in Aldi and a pair of thermal pants from Aldi. Do I need more than 1 pair of pants?

Also I presume evening wear is very casual...jeans etc??

I have no idea what sort of footwear to bring for the trip either.

Would really appreciate any advice as I am totally clueless.

    TIA

It's hard not to recommend a ski jacket for waterproofness and breathability, you'll have a much better time with the right gear. Sports Pursuit have a selection of ski wear at the moment:
    http://www.sportpursuit.com/sales

If you are really stuck for cash, can't say I'd recommend it but there are a number of 'waterproof' jackets on sportsdirect.com:
    http://www.sportsdirect.com/outdoor-clothing/ladies-outdoor-clothing/ladies-waterproof-jackets?dsearch=cat

You haven't mentioned the resort, but no need for any special footwear. A decent pair of walking/hiking boots will do fine. Evening wear is a mix between people in casual gear and people still in their ski gear!!

As much as you think you will need on the trip, it'll be lot less.

    Grrr lost reply.
I checked my normal rain jacket and it's 10,000mm so gonna go with that. Little bulky but ok.
Casual for evening wear suits me!
Think once I get ski gloves I'm sorted so!

I was a first time skier last year and this ^^^ was definitely the case. I totally overpacked.

Ski jacket and salopettes, couple of base layers (say two or three tops and bottoms & wash/rotate them), couple of fleeces, hat, ski socks & gloves and you're sorted. After that its jeans and t-shirt/top/hoodie for night time. Half the people in the bars were still in their ski gear, seriously, I couldn't believe it !

Oh, and goggles & sunglasses. And wear a decent pair of boots/outdoor shoes.

    Hi there,

Where are you heading skiing? youll have a blast :D

For clothing i got all my "first" skiing gear in TK Maxx, last me for 3 holidays, I then sold it all on Adverts.ie

so you could try Adverts.ie lots of the stuff for sale is brand new with tags..

I get my ski stuff now in Snow & Rock in Dundrum town centre or get it at the resort..

    you could try:

    http://www.53degreesnorth.ie/

At some stages during the year Lidl / Aldi sell skiing gear, Ive never bought these but some people say they are excellent value.

Heres what i think you'll need from my experience, luckly ive been about 9 times at this stage.

Decent skiing socks, normal knee high socks wont keep your toes warm, decent ones should cost €20 approx ... even one pair would do

Ski Gloves, Ski Jacket, Ski Pants (all these need to be for skking so they are waterproof etc) Some cheap fleece jumpers (you can get these in pennys)... hoodies, hats, normal gloves etc.. depending on the resort your going to you will spend most of your time in your skiing gear..

I would not recommend using your rain jacket. Ski jackets are designed to be breathable and water resistant. If you use a normal rain jacket not designed for cold weather you might end up sweating like crazy, this sweat then cools under your layers and makes you very cold and damp.

The other benefit to ski jackets is they have snow skirts. In the sleeves and around the waist. This helps stop snow flying up into your jacket when you fall. If you have never skied before expect to spend a lot of time falling and sitting on your arse :)
