The Irish Examiner Readers Photos competition 2013 winner was announced yesterday in the Examiner, you can read about it here: http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/irish-examiners-top-readers-pictures-revealed-255428.html
The top 100 pics can be seen here: http://i315.tifmember.com/?Action=_VC&id=14320210&ppwd=28982wfk
Rudi Schamhart from Anascaul, County Kerry took the overall prize, a €1,000 voucher for Bermingham Cameras with his larger than life picture of Fungie the Dolphin jumping beside his boat.
Two runners up, Ruhan Snyders and Bob Hammel each received €250 vouchers sponsored by Bermingham cameras.
The competition is open to all amateur Photographers who can submit pictures each week. Each Saturday the two best pictures from that week are published in the the Forum section of the paper and go forward to the final at the end of the year.
The 2014 Competition is already under way, and it's simple to upload your entry here: http://i315.tifmember.com/2014_readers_photography_competition.html
The Prizes for 2014 have yet to be finalised, but will be as good or better than this year's - so get shooting and entering.

This competition is a very poor relation of the Irish Times competition.
Why is the standard so low? Why is it that a cute snap of an animal or child seems to be so popular with the judges?

I thought the same thing. There are some fine photographs there but way too many snaps too.

It is a shame. It could with a little elevation of standards be a good competition that people would take seriously.
But in saying that, I have a snap of a dog licking a child's ice-cream that I just know the judges will wet themselves over.

It's for beginners and amateurs with no photo shopping allowed.

There is some amazing photography being done without any photoshopping by amateurs and beginners, but this competition has very low standards and is populated by snaps.
