If your father had one, use his.

My opinion qiukd be dont get yer own til you start farming in your own right, as getting one before may affect whatever grants / premiums are available when you do start farming.

Ya can get a sub account on your fathers herd no. Just for tax reasons, keep things more in line and less complicated, I had a sub account when I was 15, I say the neighbours were asking themselves where I had the land for a herd no or how I had one when that age as my name was on the board in mart

Load of bull**** lads. Talking about grants & premiums. Did yous not see the new proposals in place a young trained farmer can get €16,000 over 5 years & that's the maximum if you have 50 HECTARES!!! Imo young man get your herd number & start up farming. You will have lads telling you in 5yrs not to get a herd number. If you are 18 you can get one for sure. You will get away with a 3yr land lease but preferably 5 if you can.
