If you were loaded, money no object buying a car and running costs not a worry, would you buy a diesel and if so why? I'm not talking about M5's, Merc AMG's just the high end luxury models like S Class, 7 Series etc.

Rich people are often rich for a reason!

I'd have a diesel no bother, the likes of a 530d every few years would do me fine. An Elise or something else to get my jollies in would be there too.

For the super rich, I'm sure the AMGs and that are the job. I'd imagine not all super rich people are car people and just buy a top of the car because its the best one.

    no, we don't

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

If money was no object, I'd buy something I like.

Personally I think most of the "luxury" cars are some of the worst/ugliest cars I've ever seen. Particularly the 7 series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The new 7 series is quite nice looking now. If I were vulgar I'd probably get a 5 GT

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Rich people probably buy on looks, comfort and reputation - kinda like regular people.
Diesel or petrol is probably secondary to them.

I think if money were no object diesel wouldnt even enter the equation. would replace the d-max with a 6.2L petrol V8 Ford F250 . for passenger cars wouldnt own anything under 3.5 litre and theyd all be petrol

Yah we do... :pac: When you sign the contract to be rich its in there under "Siocietys expections and your obligations".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I'd like to think if I were super rich that I'd move to somewhere hotter. Maybe diesel wouldn't be popular there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

Nope! No matter how much money I had, I wouldn't buy one. The mileage I do wouldn't justify getting one. And I just don't like them...

The thing is if you are rich and have a pile of money to spend on a luxury motor you won't have a choice but to get a diesel.

    New Range rover vogue V8 D 4.4litre

This would also do nicely:- Audi Q7 6.0 V12 TDI

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 443 ✭✭maceocc2

If money was no object then no I wouldnt have a diesel.

In general though, is there not a smug element to some rich people though when it comes to cars. I remember the fad with celebrities buying Toyota Prius, I think Top Gear went umpteen weeks before they had a celeb on that didn't have a prius.

Since most car companies market diesels as green (blue) I can imagine some misguided rich people buying. Definitely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

Hang around the posher areas of Dublin long enough and you'll see tons of big Audis, Mercs and Beamers...all diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,029 ✭✭✭Sabre Man

    A filthy diesel? No way!

If money was no object I'd like a top of the range Tesla Model S.

Top Gear blew the Prius myth out of the water by driving a diesel 3 series that had lower emissions than the Prius.

Rich people can drive what they want.

The rich drive whatever takes their fancy, or generally whatever the salesman needs to sell to make targets. Cars are consumer products for the wealthy as opposed to useful assets for the rest of us.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,440 ✭✭✭Stavros Murphy

The really rich drive old volvos and subarus. I read that somwhere. I think it was in a book called "What the stinky rich people drive" by Ima Titewad.

When I am rich I will drive the shiniest cart hauled by the finest ass.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,985 ✭✭✭✭dgt

The stupid rich prance about in big guzzling yokes (celebs etc)

The clever rich fit in with a not so big yoke (directors etc)

If it were me, I'd go for what I liked that didn't stick out too much

I couldn't count a single Merc, BMW, Audi or Lexus, or car newer than 5 years old in the "executive car park" (its not a real place) in UL, however in the external governors car park there'd be a few, however none of those people draw a public sector salary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,004 ✭✭✭ironclaw

Think you need to differentiate between 'rich' and posers. Ireland has a lot of the latter. Truly wealthy people mind their money and invest wisely, not always wanting the biggest and most obnoxious car on the forecourt. The Celtic Boom had plenty in S Class Mercs would were literally living on the credit limit of the card that was leasing it. Thats not being rich, thats being stupid.

I know plenty of people for who money is truly no object i.e. Amex Black Cards etc and they would have no issue keeping the same car for a year or two. Just because you have it, doesn't mean you have to spend and show off. Because that is all you are doing, is showing off. Most of the car enthusiast in that 'mega rich' bracket would be more interested in rare and uniques cars, especially the 'wolf in sheeps clothing' versions or collectables. I'd drive a Diesel myself, no issue.

I would have a couple of diesels amoung my collection. My Ranger rover (or which ever SUV I had) would be diesel for sure, it's the type of engine that should be in one. I'd also consider having a diesel in a luxury car A8, 7 series etc.

If money were no object, then I'd have to say I'd have two cars. I would have to have an M5. Even though you are suggesting we focus on high end luxury I don't think I'd own one. I would also have whatever is the highest powered diesel Q7.

Your question about why would we buy a diesel... for me it would be because I like a torquey diesel for driving pleasure. I wouldn't give a crap about who thinks that you need to be doing X miles to qualify to own a diesel.

If I was stinking rich. Euromillions rich. I'd probably add a skyline to my garage too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,626 ✭✭✭✭vectra

    I would.
Just to Pi$$ off the others that would be asking "Why does he drive that" ? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

    Nope! Still doesn't compute...

Most luxury cars aren't available in Ireland with petrol engines. You simply aren't given the choice.

I'm renting in BallsBridge and many of my neighbours gave gotten a smart range of 141 Mercs, Audis, jags and Range Rovers. All diesel.

Emissions is more that just CO2. Diesels are worse for the local environment.

If you have enough money there's always choice.

Why do you assume that filthy rich people only have one car? Most will have an everyday car and a fancy one. Too many issues with driving really expensive cars.

A guy near the American embassy has a Ferrari, Aston and fcuk off big merc jeep. I'm well aware people can have more than one car. I'm just commenting on current trends.

I'd have no problem buying a diesel if rich, but it wouldn't be less than 3.0 litres.

I've had my car retuned to run on Cognac, decent power but a slight smell, the Guards kept stopping me and making me blow in the bag.

What sort of MPJ (miles per jigger) are you getting?

They measure it in "snifters" colm. You get .2 miles to the snifter in your average
Rolls. Which is not great. The smart ones have had them changed to run on Vodka. Very economical and no smell. For sports use they add Red-bull. They really fly on that mix.

It depends on the car. Big diesels are lovely to drive. 3 litre plus.

Petrols would be the preferred choice though

I think you would get this one, plus the VRT plus 5 years road tax difference for about the price of a 105bhp Golf TDI comfortline.

If I were rich the fuel type wouldn't enter into the equation. I'd simply go back through the decades and pick the cars I'd love to own including but not limited to:

1969 Dodge Charger - 7.2 Litres of petrol yumminess
    http://static.cargurus.com/images/site/2013/08/05/12/02/1969_dodge_charger-pic-4455712217779235804.jpeg

Alfa Romeo GTA 1300 Junior - 1.3 litre petrol
    http://www.alfanatics.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/alfa-romeo-gta-1300-junior.jpg

McLaren Mercedes SLR - 5.4 litre petrol
    http://www.topcarrating.com/mercedes-benz/2003-mercedes-benz-slr-mclaren-9.jpg

And many many more. I'd buy what I thought would deliver the most entertainment and satisfaction.

Don't run down the "Paddy Spec" cars,
You do realize there are cars over here which happen to be higher spec than their UK counterparts, ;)

Not saying they are luxury cars or anything,

I'm not. I am merely stating my opinion based on the very poor offerings here we saw when buying our last car.

Do tell me which Irish spec cars are actually BETTER than the UK spec - I'm all ears! :D

Wouldn't drive anything else but a diesel.

When the Touareg 4.1 V8 D kicks back from eigth gear to fourth gear it literally stands up on the suspension and "does-a-little-dance" as as the electronic traction control system applies 800Nm of torgue available from 1750 rpm, leaving snotty nosed 6/7 litre petrol V8's in it's wake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

How rich exactly, can you run helicopters on diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

I'd love a A8 diesel. The one Clarkson drove from London to Edinburgh and back on a tank. Of course I'd just be having fun with the boatload of torque available.

No fuss, no drama, just power on demand.
