Semi Auto, Sporter vs Game, Help

Just looking for an opinion or two on this one folks... My mate has an old o/u that he's intent on trading for a semi but is torn between game and sporter. He wants to use it mainly for clays and also for a little hunting of pigeons / pheasant etc. Now I'm aware of the differences between o/u sporters vs game guns. One of the biggest being weight... ie: the light game gun will kick you hard if shooting high volume clays but the heavy sporter will kill you carrying it all day etc etc.

To that end I have an o/u sporter for clays, and a Beretta AL391 game which I use hunting but I also use for clays from time to time. However the light weight of the 391 is a non issue for clays as the gas system soaks most of the recoil; so recoil is really a non issue....

So, I assume sporters are mechanically the same as their equivalent model game gun?

Also, I reckon you won't sell a semi sporter on too easily as they are more the remit of hunters?

Other that a difference in angles / dimensions, how would a semi (maxus for example) differ when comparing game and sporter models?

Finally, as he's new to the sport and is yet to really decide of clays or game shooting are more his thing, then which of the 2x options is likely to give him the most flexibility to "specialise" in one area or the other in the future when he does decide what he likes best, without having to change the gun again?

    Thanks!
