Advice needed from you 8 lane tearaways..

    Hey all,

    Like the above says, I am looking for specific advice from track runners.
    I shall proceed.

    I had some problems with my achilles and calf and through some pretty rotten and uncomfortable physio, was told the problem was probably with the stiff spikes I was wearing on the track for training.

    Since September I've moved all of my training to the grass but as the weather gets worse, il have to move onto the track soon enough. Can it affect a track season to maybe keep your track workouts to a minimum? If i can put it off until Late Feb/March..I should be able to get a full outdoor season and not aggravate my calf/achilles.

    So basically..that's it. As the sessions get more tasty..can I afford to stay away from a reliable and fast surface?

    Oh and for you complete track techos...I would love to try the Nike Maxcats (not as stiff apparently)..any feedback?

    Generally I would tend to avoid wearing spikes until about April anyway especially in training. Get yourself a decent pair of flats for your track sessions and as you get closer to the season transition back into spikes (do stride outs at the end of sessions come Apr and progress from there)

    With your training sessions you are probably looking to get the extra edge with doing your training splits in spikes but to be honest you are better off running your splits a second or two slower in training with a heavier shoe than not being able to get consistent training so don't compromise the consistency for a little bit extra speed.

    In the mean time I would be looking to get an assessment of the calves and possibly hips in order to try and iron out any imbalances which might be causing muscle tightness which would be aggravated by the over stretching of the Achilles in spikes (similar to those who don't transition slowly into barefoot running).

    If you are looking at maxcats, I presume you are a sprinter?

    While ecoli is right, you will find it hard to do max speed work without spikes.
    But if you are injured you can;t do any work.

    Have you tried a more supportive (middle-distance type) spike for training and keep the sprint spikes for races?
