Painting emulsion over gloss

I painted some shelving we got put in last year with gloss white but its a bit boring to look at so was thinking of freshening up with some colour.

Would some watered down PVA painted over the gloss be sufficient to use as a base for the emulsion or should I use something else? (Have some PVA in the garden shed so would like to use that if it will do the job)

I think some sanding may be required, if just to take the shine off the gloss.

So PVA is a no go then !!! :D

Sanding is something i like even less than painting , surely there is something else i could use?

Ah now sanding is not that bad, as long as its not a stairs. I'd say the shine will have to come off that gloss to give the next paint some decent bond. There may be another way but I'm unaware of it. I'm sure someone will pop along shortly with a solution.

Sand them and give them a few coats of satinwood.

Another vote for satinwood. It's basically in betwee gloss and emulsion on a sheen scale. Emulsion is a nightmare in a shelving situation as it gets destroyed with use, unless the shelves were not going to get much action. Also, satinwood is available in all colours.........and you won't have to sand.

Good points, for some reason i had it in my head that satinwood was only white. No sanding sounds like a winning solution too me! Thanks.

Really would be a good idea to take the shine off the gloss even are going to satin it ... Just a light rub
