Student Grant

I am 23 next month, have previously done 2 level 5 courses before (first one I recieved btea, second one I wasn't eligible for btea so supported myself with a part time job) I applied for a grant to help with the second one and was turned down, even though I was not recieving regular income (part time job was unreliable) and even though I don't live at home, as I'm under 23 technically my parent's income is taken into account, but even so, my mother is only getting a widows pension...does anyone have any similar experience on being turned down even though your circumstances are bad financially? I'm hoping to do another fetac level 5 course (and level 6 course the following year) to finally get the qualification i'm looking for, but won't be able to I'd say without the grant because as far as I know I'm not entitled to anything like btea. Would I qualify for the non-adjacent maintenance grant? (will be moving counties) i think i could just about scrape by if i got the 100% non adjacent maintence grant + my own savings (and hope I get a p/t job too!) forgot to say i'm currently on Jobseekers Allowance.

    Thanks for any input :)

I think you could get a grant gor level 6 but not for level 5. Maybe ask SUSI to confirm this in the Talk to SUSI forum.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

You were turned down for a grant for the second level 5 because SUSI wont provide funding for a repeat level of qualification. Its the same at the BTEA.

In a nutshell you wont qualify for the grant unless the next course you do is a level 6 or higher.
