Engine tapping

What would cause an engine to tap? The last couple of weeks the engine seems to tap at low revs.

I have an VAGCOM cable and it shows no faults. Oil levels seem ok. Coolant was low when checked and is now topped back up.

    Its a 2000 A4 petrol.

    Thanks

A few factors may come into play, how old is the oil, the viscosity of the oil, engine mileage and does it happen when warm or cold?. A change in oil and some MoS2 additive can help.

Its a 1.6. Oil was changed maybe 5k ago with suited oil from Micksgarage. As i put in the reg and it gave me exact one. Not sure what that was now. Carlube branded i think.

Is this likely down to the oil yeah? Worth a change in brands?

Actually one point to note is this is probably the slowest burning oil ive ever used. It never actually seems to go lower compared to other brands ive had in there. Is this a bad thing?
