Focus 1.8 engine is good, all round I think the better car, Mk1 focus' give very little trouble, parts are cheap for Fords too, and dealers are plenty, west of Ireland there is one Peugeot dealer for Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim, Longford....

The 407 SW is an infinitely nicer car to sit in for longer periods of time than a mk1 Focus (trust me, these were the wife's last two cars) although the 1.6 HDi can be a bit underpowered. Not sure about the C5 but the 307 isn't too bad. I'd go for the 407 if it has a decent service history, it's the quietest and most comfortable of the lot.

If money's tight the last thing I'd be buying is a car with a 1.6hdi engine specially an older one. There not all bad but it's the kind of engine you need a few 1000 stashed for the rainy day. Just my opinion though.

    Would've thought 2.5k would only get you a 1.4hdi 307?

At that age I'd go with the Focus, the 1.8 TDDi is an old unit which means it is a less complex unit than the others. Other than flywheels they tend to be solid. I would not fancy my chances with a €2.5k 1.6 HDi, probably has big bills around the corner.

forgot about the astra 1.7 diesel too. so the hdi are one to stay away from by the sounds of things although the 407 gets some decent reviews and so does the c5 with just the elecs giving trouble?

Out of all them the astra 1.7 diesel is the one to go for. Or any vag with a 1.9tdi engine would be a good bet the likes of an octavia. The 407 can give a lot of electric trouble as well as dpf trouble.

iv seen a 407 advertised as having the dpf turned off??? It also is remapped to 135bhp and has full service history... Any thoughts?

You'd be lucky to get a grief free peugeot with that engine around those years although they are very comfortable with good spec. Dpf delete may cause nct fail, maybe not just yet but its probably coming. Plenty of 307 estates with 1.4hdi around, less grief from that engine and can be remapped to make it reasonably lively.

I was of the opinion that the 1.4 307 was troublesome?

I have a 2004 1.4 HDi 307 from new. It has 150k miles on it now, and I never had a moments trouble with it. Only thing it got was servicing and a timing belt at 100k.

it does 55MPG easy ( over 60 MPG if you drive like my granny)

It is a bit low on power though....

Yes to run away fast. What ever hope you have of it being reliable one that was messed around with I would avoid. If you insist on looking at 1.6hdi some of the 307 came with a 90bhp engine which doesn't have a dpf only the 110bhp version had a dpf.

The 307 is, but it's in your list? imo the 1.4hdi is the least troublesome of those engines. Thats not saying you should buy one, personally id avoid any peugeot ending in a 7.

The 1.8TDCI Mk1 Focus uses a DMF and they go through them very quickly. However the 1.8TDDI uses a solid flywheel so no worries there. They are far from perfect though. They are a reliable engine generally but they do suffer from failure of the electronic part of the Bosch injector pump they use which is very expensive to sort out unless you are lucky and get a good secondhand pump, in which case it will only be fairly expensive. The odd one also suffers piston and/or conrod failure which means replacement engine time.

not on the list but would consider if it was decent. What about the 206 1.4 hdi? I know im throwing alot of different motors in there but just want the best value for my money with low running costs ie tax and insurance
