Facebook - cleaning up old accounts

I wasnt sure where to post this, I figured here might be the best board.

It has come to my attention that one of my employees has an old facebook guessing about 6 or 7 years old which he claims he no longer has access to.

On this facebook is pictures of him as a teenager with his mates standing around in alleys carrying baseball bats with hoods up, pictures with stacks of 100euro notes scattered across his bed with bottles of champagne, knuckledusters etc.. And comments about "f- da pigs" and "Ill cut dat chaps throat wen I get him", "i blew my load in2 dat girls c.u.n.t last nite" and all this kind of thing.

My customers look for him on facebook and thats the first profile that comes up.

He claims he doesnt remember the details to get back into the account and that he closed down the email address he used to sign up for it so the lost password thing doesnt work.

Is there anything I can do. Ive had a handful of customers say it to me already.... Im guessing more have seen the page and just haven't said anything.

Can you report the page to Facebook asking them to delete it on the grounds it is inflammontory/ encouraging gang violence etc?

Why do your customers look for him on facebook?

Tell him to contact facebook support, its not impossible to get access to account after losing passwords and e-mail addresses. The fact its been so lonf without being used they would probably terminate the account without much questions asked.

    quite a common thing.

When I am dealing with a new business relationship I will use google etc to find out as much as I can on the person or business I will be dealing with.

usually one of the first things that pop up on a google search is a Facebook profile and this can give a lot of insight in to the person you will be dealing with especially if you haven't physically met them.

This is going to be a huge problem in a couple of years when the 16-20year olds of today begin to realise the crap they posted online will come back to haunt them.

I am involved in a local football team and see the profiles of 18/19 year olds and to be honest some of the stuff they post is cringe worthy and some is mental. While a lot of it will be nothing more than bravado and posturing if I was a potential employer of these kids I would be skipping over their applications based on some of the stuff I would see.

Back to the problem of the OP, the only option is for the lad to contact Facebook and ask what they need from him to delete the account.

In my opinion if you give him an opportunity to take this down and he does not comply ,that could be grounds to terminate his position.

Case law can be murky on the topic ,I know of examples of facial tattoos and the like not being deemed acceptable for a company’s profile and sackings upheld. I would imagine that this could be viewed similarly but would seek proper advice before proceeding

It seems to me that to start with, this is a Facebook question more than a Work and Jobs one. So I'm moving this to Blogs / Wikis / Social media, as there may be readers over there who know more about old Facebook accounts.

And if they can't help, or your employee won't play, then it's possibly more a question for Entrepreneurship and Business Management.

(And then the employee can come back to Work and Jobs, looking for advice about how to deal with his mean boss who is giving him grief over the FB account that one of his mates set up back in the day ...
    :) )

Tbh, it's his problem and he should be the one chasing FB. Particularly after having such an obnoxious post history there.

Some help here and here for him.

I wish they wouldnt :( He does all the electrics but hes a real peoples person and the customers love him. When I was interviewing him I thought that would be a great quality to have someone like that on the team- but now I'm always worrying about it, customers skip me and go directly to him. Whats stopping him poaching customers? I reckon its because of him we get half the customers that we do get. But thats another problem for a different thread.

You need to make him a partner. You're running an american legal firm right ? :pac:

Tell him to get a Facebook password reset against all his email accounts, and have the photos changed to something better.
