Is there any database that I can check whether someone posing as me has insured a car in my name, they do have my driving licence. Thanks

You think somebody stole your identity and is using it now for insurance purposes?

    Does it matter?

Ins will be null and void and you don't have any liability in the case of an accident.

I don't really see an exposure for you.

no such data base you can check.

you could however make an application to every single insurance company for all they information they have about "you"

each request will cost about €6

so if "you" are insured somewhere without you knowing, you might find out that way.
But as far as a database that you can check.. then NO.

Someone else has your license? Report it as stolen.

Surely the traffic corp can check if mr. x is insured at all. Have they not got a database of all insured persons and vehicles ?

As for the person saying no exposure so what is the problem....if an aggrieved person turned up at my door because they have my name and address from the fake license and insurance then I would not be happy. Try explaining to the guard it was'nt you that caused the accident.

Get a new licence, report your old one as stolen, potentially not having one yourself may cause problems with your own insurance as it's a legal requirement to have one.

How would they get your name and address?

    What fake licence?

What Garda? Why wouldn't they trust witness statements and registered owner information over the insurance company's information?

Does the OP have an insurable interest in the vehicle?

read insurance policy number from insurnace disk displayed in front window of insured car, phone insurance company enquiring about making a change to "your" policy and see how far you get.

I think OP needs to clarify if the person has their license or not, and if they do how did they get it or why do they have it?

I used to be friendly with a guy who was off the road for drink driving for 8 years, he is now back on the road driving high powered cars on his first insurance policy. I left my old licence in his house over during the summer, he claims he never saw it. We are not on speaking terms now and I have a feeling he has these cars insured in my name and also the vehicle registered in my name.

If he was stopped by the gaurds wouldn't they figure out fairly quickly that he wasn't the person in the picture on the license? If he does have the car registered in your name you should pop over to his house and take 'your' car.

Report the license stolen, check with the guards who's name is on the insurance and registration for his car, explain your suspicion and give them the reg if you know it. If he is using your name they canprobably catch him without having to say you reported him.

go to your local garda station, show your own ID , explain the situation
Give them the reg of the car you suspect that may be in your name.
They will be able to check, but wont be able to give you any info, but they might just say, that the car isnt in your name.

    - if the car is in your name, then you will have to contact shannon to see what they can do

as for insurance, you'd have to make a freedom of info application to each and every insurance company, unless you can narrow it down, by seeing what insurance disc is in the windscreen of the car.

    - then inform the insurance company of any irregularities if any exist.

If this person is using your licence wouldn't he have had to change the address on it to use it without you knowing?

How is this even a thread? Seriously OP, are you saying you've been driving around for the last 6 months without a license while you suspect your ex-friend has been using your license to fraudulently insure cars in your name?

You wouldn't have just reported it stolen/lost at the time and called the Gardai to let them know of your suspicions?

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I really don't understand why you haven't done this long ago?! It's common sense!

    Don't do this.

Contact your local Garda Station and ask their advice

I applied for a replacement licence which I now have, it is the new credit card style one. I don't see what you are losing the head over. I have done nothing wrong, it only occurred to me lately(that he might be using my licence) when a friend in the trade found out that the lad I fell out with was ordering parts thru motor factors in his name. I am surprised that you have posted on this thread considering your shock at my post being even worthy of a thread!!

First of all, as AltAccount has said, his insurance would be invalid, so I don't see the point in him even bothering. He might as well drive without instead of running the additional risk of identity theft and tampering with official documents (as he would have to put his own picture on it to use it).

You don't need to present a licence to get car insurance.

The insurance documents would have to be sent to his home address, unless he is robbing your post. As this is not your home address, nothing to do with you.

The effort and risk of registering the vehicles in your name would hardly be worth it.

If anyone came to your house trying to make a claim, you could simply point to your car in your drive and say is this the car? No, you must have been given false details.

I don't think the guards would be interested unless there is some evidence that he is actually doing this beyond a suspicion.

Why don't you look at the insurance disc on the high powered car and contact that insurance company to query something on 'your' policy?

I don't want to get involved with this lad again, he is bad news. Thanks for all the replies folks.

It was my understanding, at least its the case with my insurer and I assume every other insurer, that you cannot insure a car you do not own. So, I would imagine you can make an appeal to Shannon and request all the cars that are currently registered under your name (Provided you don't have a hugely common name) If so, you would have to provide the address you assume he has registered it at. Might be quicker and more effective than engaging with insurance companies who will probably only deal with this under the term 'Identity Theft' and would probably want a Garda request / investigation rather than an individual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭Popoutman

There's another possibility - if the car is registered in your name, you could arrange for the registration documents to have an address change to your own address, use this to obtain a replacement set of keys for the car, and take home your car - after all it's in your name....

    <not being entirely serious..>

It doesn't sound likely based on what you have told us, requires a huge leap of faith to come to that conclusion. As for ordering parts through motor factors in another name I would say that's a cost saving exercise and that's fair enough. You could find out very easily (as said before by another poster) by calling insurance company about the policy. The number will be clearly marked on the disc

Every policy I've ever taken out has required me to send a copy of my licence in.

Really? that's mad, I've always had to, kinda makes sense that the insurance company would want to see it?

Why? If you're lying about your license, great excuse for them not to pay or come after you for payouts to 3rd parties.

If you're saying he should be still off the road due to his ban, but may have insurance in his or someone elses name, then you should provide some information to the Insurance Confidential Line. Try and give a reg if you can, they'll then look into it.

I didn't realise that some companies requested a copy of the driving licence.

Several different insurance companies at this stage and none have required a copy of my licence.

I've been insured with Quinn, Axa and 123 (all direct) over the years and I don't ever recall being asked for my licence. Definitely haven't been by 123 anyway.
