It really is amazing. The Saudis and the other royal families like to flex their muscle as some sort of charitable benefactors of the Muslim world, building mosques and hospitals in countries too poor to pay for it themselves, yet have people living in their own countries, countries which have a similar cost of living to any Western nation, living in hostels and effectively as slaves, completely dependent on their employer for their shi'thole accomadation and free food, earning two dollars a day in a country where the locals earn a Western wage to allow them to live in their Western standard economy. A night out on the town in the countries that allow alcohol would probably cost half a years wages, their life is nothing more than the site and the bus home to their shi't hostel for their daily rations. Unbelievable.

    That's besides the point. :pac:

It is a bit rich for a Dubai luxury hotel to charge you the same price as a hotel room in Manhattan when the kitchen staff, waiters, the cleaners and the porters are daily paid about one third of the price of a beer at the bar, or about 1% of your nightly room cost. Their profit vs costs margin must be astronomical.

Yeah but it helps keep oil nice and cheap.

Yeah but it helps keep oil nice and cheap.

Most oil men are well paid trades, often from the UK and a few from here. Oil, to my knowledge, is a pretty automated process which requires little dogsbodying labour which comes so cheap there.

Obviously the oilfields are all that are involved, there's other politics.

You don't understand a fcuking thing do you? If you are sitting on an ocean of oil and allow foreign corporations to take it but give you loads of money and guns to protect you from the smelly people you control then you're fine. Work the peasants into the ground, stone to death a bitch who cheats on her hubby, chop off the limb of one of those 2 dollar a day losers, whatever.
But use your oil wealth to help the smellies who you rule over and you're toast, man. Your ass is getting invaded to spread freedom.

I have worked in the Middle East for 22 years most of that time has been spent Saudi.

Any of the manual type of work is only carried out by Indians/Filipinos/Pakis/Bangladeshis... otherwise knows TCN's (third country nationals). Salaries would range from 1,200~3,200 Saudi Riyals for skilled trades people and much much lower than that for unskilled labor. They are typically housed in labor camps and typical would be 4/6/8/10 in a room, depending on their position/ranking. Camps could accommodate anywhere up to 2 or 3 thousand TCN's with shared bathrooms... depending on the company, location, projects. Most are on 2 year contracts, and given home leave after completing their contract term.

A huge number of illegal immigrants/undocumented have been deported in 2013. 900,000 deportations were carried out in Nov/Dec last as reported by the Arab News. This has put a massive strain on the smaller contractors/businesses many of whom have had to close down. Industrial projects that I have been involved have lost anywhere up to 50% of the workforce causing major construction delays.

The working demographics have also changed considerably for expats in the last 20 years... many management/supervisory/professional positions that were previously filled by westerners are now being done by cheaper Asian alternatives. There are still a small number of Western expats with their families here but every year that number gets fewer and fewer. Standard of education in the western international schools has also deteriorated.

Saudi is still good for making of tax free money... depending on the project/location/company the minimum for a western expat would be around the 120,000 euro per annum based on 48hr week. Average leave rotation for a guy on single status would be 10~12 weeks with 2 weeks holidays. All flights, western standard single accommodation, living allowance, transport and medical would also be provided by the company.

The weather is reasonably good when its not 40+ degrees or in a sand storm. Living is inexpensive though choices can be limited. You don't have to pack your own groceries at the supermarket or have to bring/buy own plastic shopping bags, or any of that green nonsense. You can buy as much paracetamol over the counter as you like without being treated like some kind of addict. Many times you don't need to provide a doctors prescription at the pharmacy and medication is inexpensive. Hospital facilities are excellent both private and public, they make Irelands look third world in comparison. You also don't have to get out of the car at the petrol pumps. Driving on the highway can be a bit hair raising at times but good sport all the same. Petrol is on average less than 0.10 euro/Liter. Alcohol is available... locally brewed/distilled (beer, wine, liquor can be rough though) and imported ( the good stuff in labeled bottles) with knowing the right connections. Piggy piggy is illegal here but rashers, sausages and ham can be obtained in Bahrain (if on the eastern province) and brought across in small quantities relabeled as turkey, customs dont usually search the car much, too busy playing on their iPhone. Inexpensive good internet available, web naughty sites are of course blocked but this can be got around easily enough, if so desired. Affordable female company can be had in Bahrain very easily just a short drive away... much less hassle than having a squeeze in Saudi, although also available if you want to invest the time and trouble and risk the law. Maid/house boy service is usually available to come and do the laundry, mop the floors, dishes for 5~10 euro a day.
