My best friend and I are both going to Dublin and would like to live together but there's one problem I'm going to dcu and my friend is going to ucd is there anyway we could live together and live in drumcondra or is that too awkward and also on the note of accommodation how early should I start looking for places to stay to be sure to get somewhere good?

I'd start looking now, make calls and what not closer to the start time, like about two months in advance, try get in the city that way you can get busses and so on so it'l be easier for both of you, that's my two cents on it!

Drumcondra is super handy for a DCU of course but it's a bit of a trek for UCD. Not impossible but if your friend doesn't mind spending min. 40 mins (and probably longer with morning traffic) going back and forth then yea, Drumcondra is great. However, if you're looking to split the commute a bit more evenly, somewhere closer to the south side would better. Unfortunately, due to the distance between DCU and UCD, you're not going to be able to find something that is super handy for both of you. At best, you're looking at each having about a 30min commute.

If you're looking for a house, there's no need to start looking until late July at the earliest. In fact, it's entirely pointless to start looking before then because landlords don't advertise houses now that aren't free until September! So forget about it for now - concentrate on your studies. When it gets to the end of July/start of August you can start looking through Daft etc. but even then a lot of properties won't be up yet.
