Contracting work abroad - tax implications

    Hi,

Not sure this is the correct forum, but hopefully someone can give me a steer. Here's my situation:

Im currently contracting in Ireland. I'm set up as a director of an umbrella company, and my agency pays my umbrella company, who in turn pay me. Im paid as a PAYE employee (tax deducted at source) and am liable for a personal tax return.

Im now planning on working abroad, possibly Spain or Gibraltar. Im not sure about the implications for tax when working abroad. Do I have to pay tax in Ireland on income earned abroad? Do I have to pay local tax, and can I "expense" this?

Has anyone had any experience in this area?

    Thanks!

Depends on how many days you spend here in the year and how many days you spent here in the previous year. You need to look into whether you are resident or ordinarily resident.
Also do you plan on remitting it to Ireland or spending it abroad?

No tax can be "expensed" but there may be a double tax agreement with the country which you are planning to so you may be able to claim a credit for any tax paid.

However, this is a tricky area of tax so you are best off coming in to an accountant and planning exactly what you are going to do before doing it. At least then you will be aware of what criteria you need to satisfy and you wont get any surprises with large tax bills
