I'm going to be made redundant soon and have a few general questions about claiming Jobseeker's Benefit.

    1) Can you choose the social welfare office to go to or are you assigned one?
    2) is there a possibility to sign on for the first time before being made redundant (if you know the date when it will happen), so that the paperwork is processed, by the time the date comes, or do you have to wait for the day after the last working day?
    3) If you have a period of disqualification, do you have to sign on on your first day of unemployment or do you have to wait until the period has past?
    4) Do the people at the social welfare office advise you about your options, or are they just there to check that your documentation is in order and you have to get advise yourself (e.g. Citizens Information Centre)?

    1. You have to attend the Office nearest to you.
    2. No, you can only sign on on the first day you are unemployed.
    3. Same as above, sign on on your first day of unemployment. If you delay signing on then they will presume that you are not available for and looking for full-time work. That would disqaulify you from Jobseekers for that period.
    4. If you ask for advise and options etc. you will probably get it, but the advise and options would not be generally offered voluntarily.
