It's a scam... Plenty info on this from a quick Google search!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,408 ✭✭✭whomitconcerns

short of stealing the cash from him you are never going to get it if you sell that car....

The only safe way imo is a bank transfer!

What kind of car is it if you don't mint me asking?

Really maybe I'm bein naive but he says he works overseas and will arrange everything! It's only a vw golf so he hardly a collecter

Says he hasn't got acces to his bank as he's on a cruise liner as a marine engineer,I asked for a bank transfer and he said he can only do paypal but will arrange collection of car after I've recieved payment?

Definitely a scam. Avoid unless you just want to give your car away!

Plus think about it.. it's a VW Golf. Why would a buyer in the US want a right-hand drive standard hatchback? It's hardly something exotic or a supercar

complete scam - as previous poster said - google it - been on the go for ages.

That's a well-worn scam, he'll offer to overpay and have you refund the difference. Forget about him and move on.

Well if the money shows in your Paypal account you can tell him once you transfer the money from Paypal to your bank you are not prepared to release the car.

You keep looking for a legitimate buyer is your only option I'm afraid. Golf's are always in demand (if the price is right and it's in good condition)

Best to just avoid it entirely than getting into any messing like that

Honestly I wouldn't accept payment for a car through PayPal, especially given that it's overseas, PayPal won't offer seller protection for it.

The fact that it's only a golf just sets off alarm bells, golfs/rabbits are VERY prolific in the US and have a huge following so there are plenty of them over there.

I can't see why they would want to import one, not only from Europe, but from a RHD country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭PLUG71

On reflection its seems weird that he cant get a golf wherever he is located!

Leave it mate on, its not worth the risk!!

what if he paid you by western union to a fictious name, you take the cash in cash at one of those places where folks send back cash to their parents in the 3rd world, tell the scammer you havent recieved the money and sell the car to someone that is a genuine buyer?

So he's working on a cruise ship and urgently needs a VW Golf sent to his home in America, and from the hundreds advertised in Ireland he has chosen yours, has offered to pay in full without ever seeing it or having it checked out, and has no access banking, or phone I presume?

    Seems legit.

Complete scam, has been going on for years.Only ever accept a person buying a car in person, cash is king or a bank transfer and only release when money is in your account. Very rarely with someone buy from overseas unless they are looking for a rare car, I've bought in the UK before but always call the seller beforehand and agree to give him a deposit, then I go over there myself and pay the balance in cash so I can check the car over as well.

Can't believe people still fall for these chancers, don't feel bad though it does happen but steer well clear of it you'll sell your golf over here there a popular motor!

Obviously a scam but interesting what people are saying about the Golf being popular in America. Clocked up close to 4000 miles on the West Coast (California, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon) in 2012, and pretty sure I didn't meet a Golf, VW or BMW for that matter.

Yes it is a scam, but consider this: 2 of my friends have bought bikes over the 'net from the US, and had them shipped. Worked out o.k. -I've seen and driven them both. Now, if the sellers had pulled down the 'foreign buyer - must be a scam' thing on them, it wouldn't have happened.

Just saying that it is possible to transact business on the 'net without getting scammed, but yes, do be very careful.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Email him and tell him your not entirely sure if he's a time waster or a legitimate buyer.

Ask him to send a picture of himself.

Then tell him he could of gotten that picture off the Internet and ask for a picture of him holding a frozen chicken, stating that frozen chickens are a sign of trust here (don't state where you are)

After he has sent that ask him to send a picture of himself with a recent newspaper to show that it's a current picture.

When you receive that tell him you can't see the date in the paper and would he kindly retake it with today's date written in black maker on his forehead.

Keep it going for as long as possible and try have a bit of fun.

Obviously there are genuine sellers on the net. Many of us have done successful transactions over the net. But seriously, was it not pretty obvious that this particular one appeared to be a scam from the beginning? I suppose OP, the buyer is so friendly and nice that he is offering to pay more than your asking price?

I've asked him about his offer..Will pay close to askin price and told him I'm wary of potential scam so he said just set up the paypal acc and he will transfer the money and I will be notified of payment then collection of car will be done at my convenience when funds are deposited

Ask yourself how much it would cost your 'buyer' to pay for, ship, modify to comply with local regs, test and register your RHD EU-spec car in the US. Then ask yourself how much it would cost them to buy the car there. Then stop wasting your own time on this. :)

For the love of God I cannot believe some people still get duped by these type scams.

Surely it's so obvious at this stage? Guy on another continent contacts you to buy a car that is neither rare nor a collectors item and has the steering wheel on the wrong side for him. He then agrees to pay nearly the full asking price without having someone inspect the car first. He then wants to conduct the sale through his shipping company. Do I need to go on?

If something sounds too good then it normally is.

Greed clouds judgement, it's sadly a very human response.

Def a scam same thing happend to a friend of mine recently. You send your paypal details he then says he transfered the money + the shipping costs and can you transfer the cost of shipping to some other account. Also sends a fake paypal receipt.

I once had a car for sale on done deal and I was contacted by a guy from the states who was serving in "the Irish Republic Royal Navy" on a ship out in the pacific. He wanted the car for his return to shore in the USA. He said he would send the full payment and shipping costs via PayPal with immediate effect. All I had to do was send him my PayPal link. I emailed him back telling him ireland didn't have a Royal Navy! Never heard back. Weird that.
