MUA for shoots/port building/TFP etc? HELP!
    Hi :)
First post on here..So Apologies if I'm in the wrong forum!
Was just looking for a bit of insight.. Is there ever any photographers seeking makeup artists for shoots/port building/TFP etc on here?
Folio32 and the likes are all over the place! Can't seem to find much on there.
I'm an experienced MUA, have worked with many well known brands & currently with Smashbox Cosmetics..Just really wanting to get back to building up my freelance work..
Any information or help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks so much,
    EmmaFoxMUA.

Try a post here with your details.

The folio32 site is a bit all over the place. Probably best to pay a visit to their facebook page - it's a closed group so you'll need to request permission. You regularly see posts from MUAs, Models, Photographers, making their trades known.

    Hi Emma,

While I'm sure that there are probably plenty of fine photographers on this very forum that would be happy to shoot with you, the best thing you can do for yourself is to contact the people you really want to work with the most directly and enquire about doing a test shoot with them.

The other thing I'd recommend (assuming it's the fashion/commercial industry you want to work in) is to look through the big Irish magazines and find out who did the make up for the editorials. Send them an email and ask if you can assist sometime. This is a great way of meeting and making connections with people at the top of their game. You will get to meet working professional models, hair, makeup and wardrobe people, as well as photographers. But most importantly, you will also get to meet the up and coming photographers that are also there assisting. These are the guys/girls you have a really good chance of shooting with once you make a connection. Chances are, if they're assisting on a pro shoot, they're probably pretty good and have one foot already in the fashion industry.

It may sound a bit daunting and intimidating to fire off an email to someone who appears to be a bit further along in their creative career, but remember that they were at the bottom of the barrel at some stage and had to go through the very same process to get where they are today.

Like you, I think the likes of ModelMayhem and Folio32 are "all over the place" and while there are exceptions, for the most part, they have become breeding grounds for mediocrity. I wasted a lot of time on useless people from these sites and the various Facebook groups myself when starting out in photography and I feel that it hampered my growth in the craft considerably. It wasn't until I took a more direct approach to what I wanted to do and who I wanted to be associated with in the industry that things started to look up a bit.

Sorry for rambling, and apologies if you feel this doesn't apply to you. Just thought I'd put this out there as your question got me thinking about my own past situation and it doesn't necessarily apply to just make up artists obviously.

No need to apologize for the rambling :) really appreciate any input or advice at all! I've thought about contacting a few up and coming photographers/makeup artists directly but I suppose I'm just trying to build up the nerve. Completely agree with you're point about wasting time on such sites. Definitely a lot of mediocrity, also found some casting calls a bit seedy :/
Thanks again for the advice, I think i'll just bite the bullet and go for it. We all have to start somewhere eh?
