Can I be forced to represent myself in court?

An order to regularize access (access order in place for past 10 years) has been made by my ex who will be represented in court by a solicitor. I have applied for legal aid and been advised that I am on a waiting list (approx 6 months) and have submitted a letter from the Legal Aid Board to the court. In the meantime I have contacted my ex's solicitor to attempt to find out the specifics of the complaint with a view to reaching agreement between us outside of court. The solicitor has ignored my request, replying only that matters would be addressed in court. My question - the court date is next week - will the judge insist that I represent myself? and if so, how do I prepare?
