Starting of the recession Irish self loathing reared its ugly head, making people all miserable and unbearable to be around as they act as if its just Ireland who had problems ( my guess due to never being outside of the island.)

So would you say this has died down some what? despite more and more people leaving, do you feel it has lessen to a degree? I believe it has, always drove me nuts at the start but seems maybe just maybe people have learn't that no matter were you live such problems exist . Some places have much worse social problems!

So sit back in think from the start of recession to now has the self loathing syndrome which infects Irish died down or strong as ever?

Self loathing is a national passtime for a lot of people. That and bitterness towards people who do well, people who don't do well and everyone else, whilst maintaining a veneer of 'wahey, we're Irish, we're great craic.'

    I'm still a miserable bastard!

There's probably not as much moaning about the recession but there still plenty of moaning. We'll always find something to moan about. Its what we do.

it's only the gobsh!tes who got themselves into financial trouble that are moaning now.
im happy, and richer than i ever was.

it does get annoying though to see all the horrible moany faces every day going around the place, but then i think "ah, they thought they were great at the time" so i almost relish it a bit. sour puss w*nkers.

I love moaning about things. Because it's the right thing to do, and its therapeutic.

As a nation we've been royally hoodwinked, and most have gone along with it. What's not to moan about?

Keeping it bottled up, will make you ill.

there's always the option of not giving a sh!t though....
it's easier to give up on this country than to actively participate in it.

    It's January, it's raining, it's cold, I'm broke.

Plenty of ammunition there without getting into specifics.

that's a load of sh!te to be honest.

    that's all you got??

it's a WARMER than usual january, it's NOT raining, it's not too cold and you're far from broke if you can afford to be on the internet.

no problems there, so you shouldnt be moaning - unless you're just "A moan"...

And now I got someone on the internet telling me what I should and shouldnt be doing.

What happened in Ireland was a great shame. I have sympathy for those in financial difficulties, who lost their jobs and are still struggling. I find it sad that people can slag others off, who are not as well off as they are. I left in '99 because although it was nice to see people happy and doing well, I felt I'd done my stint.

I don't think it's self loathing to criticise negative aspects of one's own country - it's quite a positive thing to do. I live in London now and am working towards the end of my stint here. Still some years to go but London, just like Dublin, will always be with me. Good times and bad.

That's not entirely fair though, is it? You say you're rich now and dismiss those in trouble as "gob****es" - not everyone has had your luck.

Really? It's After Hours, my first post was tongue in cheek. I'd like to think most people posting on boards at 1pm on a Thursday afternoon could have plenty worse going on.

Could it be that you can only see the negative aspects of what people are saying here? You're unable to see the light-hearted side of it? I would consider that to be in the same league as MOANING !

    fair point to make, agreed.

Some moaning can be good for you.

I don't see it at all tbh. Self loathing is usually an argument boards sinn fein/republican posters use against people who say anything negative about ireland. Other than that, I've never seen the phrase used in normal conversation.

I'm quite happy being self-loathing and as such, am immune to the usual crazed pep-talks from forelock-tugging lickspittles.
