NCT due but car off road

Hi - just wondering if anyone has gone through this before.

The engine on my car siezed last October and as I couldn't afford at the time to replace the engine I declared it off-road (for 12 months) when the tax was due at the end of October (the car is still off-road as I still can't afford to repair it at the moment and I don't know when I'll be able to get it sorted).

I got the reminder letter through from the NCT crowd telling me the NCT is due at the end of this month.

Do I have to inform the NCT people that it's been declared off-road since October? And what happens when I eventually do get the engine sorted, for example if I get it sorted and back on the road in July this year obviously I'll book it in for an NCT but would that be backdated to January this year?

    Anyone have any ideas?

you don't need do anything about the NCT which will be back dated when you get it fixed to the previous due date.

Search back through the forum, I know this has been asked before. I'm pretty sure the answer was that you're allowed to drive it to NCT centre when declared off the road.

Whenever it does pass, it will be back dated to the date that the car was first registered.

That loophole was closed/removed last year. It's now an offense to drive any car without an NCT, even if you're driving to or from a test.

Ah, good to know. The Dept of Environment should remove it from their site then!

It seems unfair that it would be back-dated don't you think?

I mean I've gone through "official" procedure to declare it off-road, it is parked off-road and from what the tax office told me; when it's back on the road I will be taxed from the date it is back on the road.

Wouldn't you think it would be the same for the NCT?? Or am I just being a bit thick? Ah well

    Thanks for your replies.

NCT times have always been in relation to date of first registration. First NCT due 4 years after registration, cars over 10 years from date of first registration require yearly NCT. It's just how they've specified the system works. At the time it may have seemed to make sense :pac:

So because of that, the NCT will always be due based on date of registration. Hence why the NCT is effectively back-dated, or rather, only valid until the subsequent anniversary of registration.

On a side note, you can NCT a car 3 months in advance of the previous NCT expiry date/due date. If you were to wait and do this, it wouldn't get backdated.

i'm pretty sure that isn't the case and someone posted the relevant info but can't be doing with searching for it.

I'm sure you can drive to/from the test and to/from repairs associated with the test
