Black smoke from engine cap

Viewed two cars yesterday. Both the same model, similar mileage etc. Both were 2010 vw golf 1.6 Tdi.

When I unscrewed the engine lid and removed the oil dipstick from one of the engines, there was a quite a bit of a black smoke coming out. What is this a sign of?

I did the same on the other car and there was no smoke output.

Both cars were running at the time.

Engine cap? You mean the cap you unscrew to fill up oil?
Black smoke from there is a bad sign. I am not entirely sure why in this case (perhaps low oil/friction burns) but there should be no smoke there at all :D

    How was oil level?
