    Hi all,

I have a question regarding buying from america. I am aware that any item with a value amount below €22 excluding shipping will not be charged vat.

I want to buy from us websites. I was thinking of using services such as myus.com which is basically parcel motel when buying from america. I am quoted a delivery price of roughly $60 dollars

QUESTION: Will I be charged additional vat if the value of the item surpassed €22 or will the company taken care of it?

Of course you'll be charged for it as it's your problem and not the parcel hotel's problem AND the 22 EUR includes the shipping cost and not only the item cost.

I am aware that any item with a value amount below €22 excluding shipping will not be charged vat.
The limit does include shipping, which makes sense otherwise people would be charging $1 for a TV and $10,000 for shipping & handling.

So in theory if you got a $1 pen (really worth that) sent express at $60 then you are liable.

The actual limit at the moment for 23% vat items is in practise €26.08
    Hi,
I was reading on revenue.ie that the limit is €22 until something is applicable for VAT when importing from online shops

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/customs/leaflets/pn1179.html

Consignments not exceeding a total customs value of €22 may be imported without payment of VAT.

However it goes on to say

Where the customs duty on a consignment of goods amounts to less than €10 it will not be collected. Similarly, VAT liability amounting to less than or equal to €6 will not be collected.

So on typical imported items like a DVD the VAT is 23%, so if the DVD is €25 it is above the €22 threshold limit, but the VAT would only be €5.75 so is below the €6 limit. Am I right in thinking that this in effect means the real threshold value for non-excise items at 23% is €26.08 -since only items above this value will have VAT equal or above €6.

    Thanks

    Dear XXXX,

Your calculations in the example you quoted are correct but do remember that, if the freight costs or the VAT rates increase, the €22 threshold will produce a different result. This threshold is set in European Law, while the €6 de minimus limit is just a local practice based on administrative expedience.

Aware this is old now but would appreciate the answer to this question:

Something costs 80$ (59€) from USA

    I send it to shipto.com

They quoted me a shipping price of $50 (€37)

Will i be charged 23% VAT on:

    €59 (price of item itself)

    OR

€97 (price of item and shipto.com shipping cost)

Thanks to anyone who can help

    Combined with shipping cost.

@blahblah06 and any others How do you find shipto.com?

What kind of added expense would it add to a cheap ($10) but hard to find small item for example I saw on ebay?

The reviews out there are extremely mixed - either 5 or 1 star.
