F1 2014 Fantasy League & Forum Competitions

    Howdy folks,

I presume we're doing the same again this year as we done last year? Fantasy competition & forum competitions? I think the former isn't something we can set up just yet correct? But we should prob have a chat about how the latter, the forum competition, will work...

Any suggestions for changes this year? Suggestions for new questions? Any suggestions at all before the season starts so that we're ready to roll come March :)

I was thinking, instead of changing the questions as the season progresses, at random intervals...we allow the opportunity for questions to be changed/altered only after every maybe four races? It just gives some stability & is more fair than just changing them off the bat.

Should we keep the podium/fastest lap questions? I don't think the podium one was won at all last season?

Is that not a thread for sorting out the winners of the forum competition? I meant having one to sort out the running of the 2014 ones, new questions, question changes etc

I arrived on this forum too late last year but this year I fully intend on making some absurd predictions.

So we ended 2013 with these questions:
    1) Which team will NOT have a car finish in the top 3 - Red Bull
    1) Which team will NOT have a car finish in the top 3 - Ferrari
    1) Which team will NOT have a car finish in the top 3 - Mercedes
    1) Which team will NOT have a car finish in the top 3 - Lotus
    2) Redbull on Pole - Yes
    2) Redbull on Pole - No
    3) Ferrari Vs Mercedes - Ferrari
    3) Ferrari Vs Mercedes - Mercedes
    4) Webber to finish on the podium - Yes
    4) Webber to finish on the podium- No
    5) Will there be any retirements in the first 5 laps - Yes
    5) Will there be any retirements in the first 5 laps - No
    6) Safety Car - Yes
    6) Safety Car - No
    7) Winner to be Pole qualifiyer - Yes
    7) Winner to be Pole qualifiyer - No
    8) Will any two drivers crash into each other, forcing an immediate retirement? Yes
    8) Will any two drivers crash into each other, forcing an immediate retirement? No
    9) What will be the fastest lap?
    10) Who will finish on the podium?

Seeing as we have all new regs & engines for this year, should we look at reviewing the points system too? For instance, we've no idea which engines are competitive yet, so for question 1, should all points be equal...ie no difference/lesser points to Red Bull for the moment as we don't know how well the Renault power plant is?

Maybe instead of Red Bull on Pole for question 2, we should amend it & give it a broader scope, similar to question 1 where you pick the team...so pick between Red Bull, Lotus, Ferrari & McLarn for pole...with equal points again for the moment?

    Question 3 seems ok

Question 4 is obviously defunct now. So how about giving Ricciardo some of the limelight, now that the pressure will be on him to perform. Something like "Ricciardo to finish in the top 5?", if even just for the first four races?

Question 5 seems like a dead cert for "yes", & question 8 shares a lot with it, so how about amalgamating them together, & make question 5 "Will there be any retirements within the first five laps due to a collision?"

    Questions 6 & 7 seem ok

Depending on feedback, question 8 could be considered part of question 5 & dropped?

There have been posts about dropping questions 9 & 10 altogether last time around, any thoughts on this? Also, should we agree the questions can only be changed for every four races...rather than from one race to the next?

I'd like to see more questions about the midfield teams and drivers added. Sauber versus Force India, Williams versus Torro Rosso etc.

Maldonado to damage his car? Yes or No

Chilton to cross the finish line last (excluding retirements)? Yes or No

I suspect a lot of these questions could evolve as the season goes on, because we really have no idea about the midfield pecking order. Maybe 'first non-big four finisher'? And by big four McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes/Lotus?

The unreliability of cars, especially in the first few races, is going to be a big talking point this year. If teams have issues in qualifying or in the practice sessions for example, we might see the scenario arise where they struggle to have the cars ready in time for the race.

So it might be useful having a question along the lines of "All cars to make the starting grid?" or some variation of this (for the first 3/4 races anyway).

That could be an interesting one but perhaps not for as long as 3 or 4 races.

Another similar scenario that occurs from time to time at the beginning of a season is the possibility of exclusion after scrutineering has taken place. Of course the problem with this being used as a question is that we would have to wait longer for the results.

We could have questions based around margin of victory, i.e. greater than 10, 20 or 30 seconds. The same could be done for Pole, 0.25, 0.5 or 1 second.

How about having being able to nominate 1 Home race where you get double points as per the fantasy league? You would simply have to say that you want whatever race it is to be your home race at the time you submit your answers for that race (before qually obviously).

Fianally, I think the fastest lap question and the podium question should be scrapped for the sake of peace and quiet....

I have to say, I wasn't a fan of the home race option in the recent fantasy league. It skewed the results for a lot of the season & was hard to accurately gauge where you where in the field

Would have have to pick the home race before the season started? This would avoid people having the advantage of knowing which teams are doing well and would make it easier for them to pick a home race based on results so far?

I think we need to set a minimum duration of questions before they can be amended? Perhaps every 4 races? (Saying that, I dont want to re-do all the questions every 4 races. Perhaps if a question has an obvious consistent answer it gets amended?)

I'd agree with this. They wouldn't have to get amended every four races, only if they needed to be. So, over the course of four races, if a question isn't working out, everybody involved will know what the question will be changed.

Would there be any interest in adding a Last Man Standing element to the competition?

For those who may not know, Last Man Standing is popular among football fans where a different winning team must be picked each week from the Premier League fixtures. If the team you picked wins, you carry on into the next week, if they lose or draw, you are eliminated. The tricky part is that you can only pick each team once so when you have used up all the good safer teams like Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea etc., you will (if you make it that far) have to choose from the dregs like Cardiff, Sunderland and Man Utd. :D

The idea is that the competition continues until only one player is left and they win. If everyone is eliminated at the same time the the competition resets and all teams are available to be chosen again.

My suggestion is that we start running this as part of the F1 comp with a bonus of perhaps 100 points for the winner. This would however mean anyone who misses a week would have to be eliminated too as it wouldn't work otherwise. Also, since there will be a limited number of winners, the question should simply be to nominate a points scoring finisher for each race. There were 18 points scoring drivers last year so that gives plenty of scope to choose from.

If all players were eliminated and the points were not awarded to anyone, there would be a few options like splitting the points between those who lasted longest or restarting with just the group who were last eligible but restricting their choice of drivers to those perhaps outside of the top 12 in the drivers championship at that point in order to help bring about a conclusion before the season ends. Of course, if nobody wins the first time round, we could always say so be it and nobody would get the points.

    Any thoughts?
