Grand Canal Commute

    Howdy,

I've been doing the commute form Clane into town when I can for the last while -- right now I go via celbridge->lucan->strawberry beds->park->NCR. Was considering detouring at Celbridge and getting onto the grand canal path at Hazelhatch - does anyone know how passable this is, or if there are any safety issues with doing it? Obviously I can't drive the route to see how it is. The street view of the ends of the routes at locks looks decent enough (I'm on a hybrid) but just wondering if the path disappears, if it's full of scaldies, etc.

It's more than a year since I walked it from the 12th Lock to Hazelhatch. I think most of it would be easily passable on a bike. I think part of it was on grass but most of it was on tarmac or chips.

I'd drive over and check the section between the McEvoys pub and Adamstown some weekend - before doing your commute. Last time I was there it was pretty impassable without an MTB...

I commute from Celbridge to D4 and wouldn't go near it myself, although I'm on a racer. This is the route I take http://goo.gl/maps/CNEHS, doesn't add too much to the journey.

Yeah GMaps tells me to go that way and hit the canal at parkwest, where I hear there's a proper route.

Yep from there the route is grand, straight shot as far as Rialto, nice and smooth along the greenway. Not sure about scaldies during the winter (I haven't cycled since October cause of a knee injury) but the rest of the year its mostly grand. The scaldies only really come out during the summer and they're like a plague of locusts around bluebell area. They don't bother you much, I've had one or two run ins but nothing serious.
