I had a look into the different macros a while back and decided on the 100mm. The biggest decision was chosing between the standard glass and L glass.

Here's an example of some of the pictures taken with the two.

Somebody told me the 100mm IS version was the one to go for ?

Ive the 100mm non L (non IS) version. Never felt the need to spend the extra money on the L. Specially since when doing Macro Id always use a tripod, so IS would be turned off anyway.
    great lens for the money.

Never used the Sigma so I would not be in a position to comment on its performance. However I did feel that the canon was a better built lens when I was looking to buy.
