Golf Ball Choice

I just wanted to get some information on if playing a 2 or 3 piece ball would be more beneficial to my game compared to a Pro V1 or Z Star. I have a moderate to fast swing speed but I have read that if you don't have a consistently fast swing speed, you can lose a significant amount of distance and the ball will not perform to its full ability. I know the benefits a premium ball can have around the green but I'm wondering if the ball will hold me back in other parts of my game.

What I was always told in the past at lessons, fittings, etc...is play with the best ball possible within your budget

So if you can afford the pro v1 play it.

Lately I've been buying second hand pro v1's simply because there cheap (€15 for 12 ) but honestly I think I prefer the Velocity I had a few weeks ago.

More than likely I'm simply not good enough to appreciate a softer ball.

Always a risk buying second hand though that you dont really know the quality of ball.

I play srixon ad-333 myself, find them a good balance of quality-price

Not bad advice that. Truth is, for most of us amateurs a mid range 2-3 piece ball is perfectly adequate. Play a more expensive ball if you can, not because you think you should.

I certainly wouldn't be paying a premium at this time of year. I could catch a Pinnacle thin with a 3-iron right now and it would still pull up in a few feet.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with the play the best you can afford idea.
For some people (probably most people), they simply don't compress a Pro V1 enough to get any real benefit.

By all means play one if you want, but there are lots of good middle of the road options that, truth be told, would suit a lot of amateurs far better than a Pro V1.
NXT Tour comes to mind - any time I've played that I've always felt it was a really good ball and reasonably close to a ProV1. I've often used those upper mid level balls on a golf holiday if I'm having a bad time with the driver and don't want to be spraying ProVs into lakes :)! To be honest there's not a whole lot of difference, a little for sure, but not as much as you'd think.

Note: for Pro V1, also read Z Star, Lethal, B300S etc. ie top of the line balls.

True, some of them have a small bit of wear but generally they're all very good balls.

Every now and then I'll get €20 worth of ball of a local young lad (60-70) and it has a lot of good titleist/nike/callaway and then the other half is crap practice balls.

When the weather gets good again I think I'll pick up a set of velocity, most of the balls are plugging now so I can't see much use playing anything expensive.

I use Velocitys, seem to go well though I couldn't say for certain that they're definitively the best ball for me

Srixon AD333's or Soft Feel for me mostly, I usually snap up a few dozen when they are on offer around the place, they seem to be frequently reduced to €19 per dozen.

Currently going through a bag full of random balls that has been sitting in the shed.

I mainly just use prov1's although I have used the Bridgestone equivalent for slower swing speeds and found them very good. And they can be got for 26 euro at mcguirks! I don't think the average golfer will notice much of a difference between all the premium balls. They practically all the same. I sometimes use Nike pd's aswell. Cheap ball but they are decent enough and find they don't fly as high in the wind!

Srixon z-stars are in Nevada bobs for 33euro at the moment. Just thought I would add that! :)

...oh & just to add, I'm mostly playing ultras at the moment as I got a free box of them & not going to be losing anything expensive in the winter months
