3DS System Transfer Balls

Such a hell of a job I'm having trying to get the stuff my Zelda 3ds to the Pikachu XL.
The Zelda one was giving lots of trouble trying to connect to the internet and eventually I had to just place it on the router to get it to allow the transfer.
However, the connection between both systems kept dropping resulting in the transfer stopping. I tried it with the systems beside each other on top of each other and many more combinations and it looks like one of them has an issue with the local wireless connection.
Both systems are second hand and have been working away fine so I think it is a recent fault. Is this a common fault with either of these models? Can it be fixed without sending them back? Can I even send them back, seeing as I don't have the original receipts?
All I want to do is play the Fire Emblem DLCs on the XL and some of the other eshop games.

I can't do certain things like download from the eShop if the firewall on my router is on. Tried creating a rule for the 3DS, tried MAC filtering, tried everything I could think of but nothing, other than turning off the firewall works in my case. I know it shouldn't be a firewall issue as both are local, but give it a shot

I don't have both with me now, so will have to try that when I get home. Might try them connected to my phone's personal hotspot as well.

To be honest I'm finding using the internet on the 3DS to be a bit of chore at times.

Same here, as I said I've to temp disable the firewall when buying anything from the eStore. Though in saying that, I done a system transfer from my original to new XL & it went flawlessly first time, though I did have the firewall off at the time because they have to connect to the net during the process...

Do you have a WiiU? Is that similar with regards being persnickety with connecting to the world wide web?

I do have a Wii U, but I use the usb LAN adapter with it. When I first got the Wii U the initial update kept failing via wireless connection. Tried the lan adapter & it worked first time, so I can only assume there's something in Ninty's wireless tech that my router really doesn't like. Since using the lan adapter in the Wii U, I've never had a single issue.
