Apologies if this has been asked before ... My I phone 4 has started to act up , no alert tones are working , ringtone is fine , when I press the up/down volume buttons nothing happens , the odd time the bell symbol will appear but no bars under it , when I get a text or email the phone will vibrate but no noise , when I try to change the alert tone I can't hear any tone but it vibrates , no sound when I play a video on YouTube etc.
any help is appreciated , thanks.

Okay, first port of call is to do a Hard Shutdown - Hold the Home button and off button simultaneously until the phone powers off. If the issue persists upon rebooting the phone then check if the Do Not Disturb function is activated.

Hi , thanks , I tried all that and also tried cleaning the charger port , the strange thing is that the sound works fine for phone calls just not for texts or emails etc or videos
