How long not driving do you lose your NCB?

Just wondering about this as I sold my car last October and just use the motorbike for the moment. I will buy a car again, maybe in the summer. But is there a period of time that passes meaning that insurance companies won't take into consideration your previous years driving and NCB when giving you a quote ?

Thanks, would you know if two years is pretty standard across insurance companies or are there any that don't take it into consideration after one year ?

I haven't heard of less. Best thing to do would be to contact your previous insurer.

I can confirm its 2 years across the spectrum. I nearly lost mine a few years back when I had a PSV on the road.

Do you keep you ncb while driving under trade insurance?

I have 6 years ncb but have been on a trade policy since April and will be there for the foreseeable future, will my ncb just stay at 6 years and never increase?

you will lose it after 2 years driving the trade policy.
But in 2 years time, some insurers may give you a discount for driving under ht trade policy, but it will not be as good as having a personal full NCB.

I don't know how you stand with that, but generally once you have six years any more is irrelevant. RSA for example only required over five for the maximum no claims discount afaik

Fook, I will have to take back out a policy in my own name within the next year or so to protect it :(

Keith do you reckon I could run a classic policy on the E30 alongside the trade policy to keep the ncb?

I asked my insurer the other day, i'm in northern ireland and hence the UK system, but I reckon ROI is the same

She said it's 2 years is the legal standard, but they (direct line) offer 3 years if you were insured with them immediatly before your break and return to them immediatly after. Seemingly they're not the only insurers to offer this.

Does the trade cover the E30 or the Toyota?

Yeah and the Omega, I am a named driver on the boyfriends policy so covers any cars I drive or own 3rd party

I'd be keeping a policy ticking on the E30 so in case of Theft / Fire if that's the case.

Presuming the Omega is disposable, I'd just run her under Trade.

Hummmm she is in storage so would kill me to have to double insure it but may have no choice.

Interesting topic I never would have known this ;)

Well the NCB might not be as bad. Most insurance companies give "named drivers" discount. So if you're named on the trade policy the NCB earned here can be transferred.

As an example, I took out a new policy a week ago on a 2nd car. I've a policy in my own name already with NCB there. But it could only be on one policy. As I am also named on my wife's insurance policy, the recognised this as named driver experience and applied the full 5 year discount to the new policy.

In the context of the thread, if it were possible to buy insurance cover for ( say ) 3 months, would doing so every year and nine months allow for retention of NCB ?
