New runner moving to Dublin

    Hello,
I just joined the forum. It seems like a great place to learn stuff about Ireland.
I am moving to Dublin/Ireland in the end of March. I found a great job and decided to make the move. I have never moved to a new country before and do not really know what to expect.
Nevertheless, the thing I am most concerned about is... running in Dublin and around. I have been an avid runner/climber/mountaineer for the last couple of years. I have finished a an ultra(100k) some marathons and a bunch of other smaller mountain races.
You probably could imagine how many questions I have right now and I would really appreciate it if you can answer some of them.
1.I love running, but I especially love trail running. Are there any good trails around Dublin, which i can hit during the weekend. I noticed some roads on google map.
    2. What is the best place/neighborhood to live in Dublin with some fun running routes around. I will be working around George's Quay. I usually run ~10miles a day during the week.
    3. Are there bad neighborhoods I should not, for example run through after dark, as I will be working during the day. I usually go out around 7.30pm till 9.
    4. Are car drivers tolerant with runners? I would hate to start a new life in dublin and get hit by a car...:) I do not plan, of course to run in the middle of the road.
    5. I am a very social person and would like to be able to go out on runs with other people from time to time. What would be the best way to find runner friends and people who can show me around the block? Races, Running clubs? I already have a couple of races in mind.

Thank you in advance for everything.
I would love to exchange Skype details with someone more knowledgeable about running in the area. PM me for more details.

    Thanks a million.
    Filip.

Firstly, welcome! Lots of good trails in the Dublin Mountains (check out the Wicklow Way) and the Dublin Mountain Parternship site. Also, lots of races in the mountains. Check out the IMRA website. There are a few trail ultras in the calendar too.

    2. What is the best place/neighborhood to live in Dublin with some fun running routes around. I will be working around George's Quay. I usually run ~10miles a day during the week.
For a running enthusiast, it's hard to think past living somewhere near the Phoenix Park, a 1,750 park in the heart of the city, with abundant trails and running routes. Alternatively, you could aim for somewhere at the base of the Dublin Mountains, but you'd be quite a stretch from George's Quay.

    3. Is there bad neighborhoods I should not, for example run through after dark, as I will be working during the day. I usually go out around 7.30pm till 9.

It's largely safe for runners at night. You might get a bit of abuse hurled at you, but that's about it.
    4. Are car drivers tolerant with runners? I would hate to start a new life in dublin and get hit by a car...:) I do not plan, of course to run in the middle of the road.
They're not too bad. Irish drivers are not great though, particularly when it comes to roundabouts. You just have to keep your eyes peeled at all times!

You'll have no problem finding a club - in fact there are a few, just a couple of miles from George's Quay.

There are numerous running clubs in Dublin (some better than others ;)), but it really depends where you are living as to which one would suit you best. I'd say set up a base first and then look into joining a club.

If you like to run 10 miles a day, it might be good to get into a routine of running into/home from work....The running is pretty good and you shouldn't be more than 10 miles from George's quay no matter where you live. Having showers in work is obviously a bonus here...

For weekends as KC says hit the trails/hills in the Dublin mountains.
Keep an eye out for weekend long runs on this thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055449727
Lots of us meet at the weekends in Phoenix park (and elsewhere) for long runs
