A friend is going looking at some of these tomorrow. Apart from the usual 'french cars are ****' does anyone have specific issues to look out for on the engine and 206s in general?

The 1.4, I know they are probably fairly underpowered.

Yup, at 500 miles a week his main concern is MPG.

My old man has a 2007 commercial one from new with the 1.4d engine. He is delighted with it esp the fuel economy. It's no rocket but certainly does not feel underpowered either. He thinks he's beating 60mpg though I suspect he hasn't measured it in years. Totally reliable with 150k kms done.

I was getting about 50mpg from that engine in a heavier 307 and that was with a heavy right boot because it was pretty dead. Id imagine you would get quite a bit more in an easily driven 206.

The engine is pretty solid although an injector failed on me. The cat can become blocked and can be bet out with with a hammer. Turbo is right at the front of the engine and its very easy to check for issues.

The engine can be remapped up to about 90bhp apparently. I bought it for the missus and got rid after about 6 months because it was issue after issue with it, the 307 is a scrapheap.

Check out the 206 section in peugeotforums
    co.uk for more detailed stuff.

The 1.4 hdi's are a great little engine and mpgs do work out in the late 50's when driven normal.

Check the back axle for play as the bushings on these do fail and sit out like this /----\
The may also need injectors seals (copper washers) from time to time.

Other than that check the normal electrical stuff like elec windows/wipers/lights/c-clocking etc.

The pedals are very close to each other in the 206. He really would want to make sure he can drive it comfortably before buying one to do 500 miles a week in.
