Renewing Learner Permit, Help Please

Hi, my learner permit was valid from18 Aug 10 to 24 Aug 2012 and I never renewed it after failing a test and getting a job that didn't require a car anyway.

A year ago I tried to renew it but all my documents and the money order were returned in the post with a note saying provide proof

I now want to start driving though and Im 90% sure I dont have to sit through the mandatory lessons and all that, I just apply for the test and wait for the test date to come in the mail as my proof.

My question is, do I now have to go to one of these NCLS centres to get my application? Or is there a way to get the form, print it out and post it off to NCLS along with the €35, pictures and proof of test?

Is there anything else I should know? There really is no way to get an answer to this, I was on hold for 2 hours today before I gave up and there has been no answer to any of the emails Ive sent.

    Many thanks.

You need to go to the NDLS centre and renew from there. The first time you do it you must attend for security reasons.
    No need to do EDT

If you are renewing an expired license after Oct 29 2013, you must go to your local NDSL centre and do it there. You can't do it by post anymore.

The mandatory driving lessons? I thought Id get away with it as I had a learners permit from a certain date? How do I renew then? Bring them proof that Im doing EDT?

Where are you getting that you need to do EDT from?
Your learner permit is from before 4th April 2011, therefore EDT does NOT apply.

Go to an NDLS centre and renew your learner permit.

    You DON'T need EDT.
You need proof of a test taken and failed in last 2 years or a booking for a test, also you DON'T need photos as NDLS take them on site

Yeah sorry I misread Mascots post, thats good to know so thanks everybody, Ill just bring in my old learner permit and a printout of the email I got today when I booked my test and that should be it?

Last question, will a printout of this email be all I need to prove I have an upcoming test when I go into them on Saturday or do I need something more substantial?
    Dear Mr. XXXX,

I acknowledge receipt of your driving test application and fee for category B - MOTOR CAR/ LIGHT VAN. We will notify you of your appointment details, generally up to four weeks before the date.

If you are applying for a third or subsequent Learner Permit, you can use this letter as evidence that a driving test is being arranged for you.

    Please note the following:
If you are a first time Learner Permit holder for licence categories of Motorcycle, Car or Works Vehicle (AM, A1, A2, A, B and W):

The code 991 will appear opposite the licence category under the column headed restrictions/information; the category start date will appear opposite the licence category under the column headed 'ó/from' (column 10 in the case of a plastic card permit).
You must hold the Learner Permit for six months before taking the test. A holder of a current full driving licence in the category from another jurisdiction for more than six months is exempt (For details see www.rsa.ie or contact us.)
A first time Learner Permit holder for a Car or Motorcycle, must take a structured driver training programme with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) before taking the test. For car learner drivers this is known as Essential Driver Training (EDT) and applies to those whose first Learner Permit for licence category B has a start date on or after 4 April 2011. For motorcyclists, it is known as Initial Basic Training (IBT) and applies to those whose first Learner Permit for licence category AM/M, A1, A2 or A has a start date on or after 6 December 2010.

The attached leaflet will give you information on preparing for your test; for more information on this and about IBT and EDT please visit www.rsa.ie.

    Yours sincerely,
    John Scott
