It only struck me over the weekend that this milestone had past for St Ita's Hospital Radio in Portrane, Co Dublin. We hear about a lot of negative things about radio but one thing is for sure, this station has had nothing but positives since it's inception back in 1983 and has paved the way for many a presenter to experience broadcasting and give something back to the community of Portrane and it's staff and residents of the Hospital. Don't get me wrong but I believe it's a worthwhile story for people to hear. Maybeele reading this with access to other media might run a story on it. There is still plenty going on with the station today with thanks to its volunteers, staff and station manager Tom Noctor. It's modern enough in today's terms broadcasting on 89.5fm and available on line like most community stations these days.

I don't really want to tell a story about the station yet as I hoping some of the past and present volunteers and Tom himself contribute to this thread. Let's just call it a fitting tribute to a wonderful station.

May it enjoy 30 years more of broadcasting.

The first legal non-RTE station in 1989.

That is interesting. I did not know that a hospital station was on that long in Ireland. I take it that St. Ita's Hospital Radio was in-house for a while, unless it was technically a "pirate". By the way, when exactly did it start broadcasting. If, for example, it started in January 1983, that would make it 31 years old!

When did it first get an FM Frequency?

But the question I am really interested in is the names of people who were involved with St. Ita's Hospital Radio that went on to other radio stations.

They started in December 1983 - although whether that was on FM or piped to speakers or headphone sockets in the wards isn't readily apparent from their "about us" page.

It was the first station to obtain a licence in 1989 if I remember correctly.

My previous question still applies. Name a few names who have gone on to other stations!

I will have to get on to Tom about that to confirm but there has been a few through the door who have gone to better things. Not only presenting but one or two have worked behind the scenes at different radio stations.
