Im strongly considering getting the citizens eco drive perpetual calendar. I figured seeing as there was a watch section here on boards it mightened do any harm just to get some expert advice before I go spending.

Im not going to lie, I think its a great watch and I would have bought it already only Im just not sure about this solar power business... especially here in this country of ours where a lot of days are overcast.

I bought a Citizen Eco Drive watch for Mrs. BrensBenz some years ago. It's been scratched, dunked, dropped, chewed (by a pup) but, as far as I know, no special measures were ever taken to power it up and it never ran out of power.

Their blurb says it converts "any natural or artificial light source and converts it into energy." Seems to work!

Yeh, the sales man said as much about the artificial light, but to be honest I just wanted to hear it from someone else that's not after my money :D

So it sounds like they can take a beating then. Can they be polished up at all? Like suppose in 3 or 4 years when the glass is looking dull and has a few scratches would it be a big job to replace it or buff it up?

Sorry, I'm no expert and can't help with that question, although I'm sure the dealer could advise. A local jeweller was able to polish out some scratches on my late dad's 1960's Cyma watch but, if I was buying again, I'd look out for sapphire crystal or other "scratch-resistant" glass.

I love 'em. If you're not wedded to an automatic movement but just want something to set and forget, I think an Eco-Drive with perpetual calendar is hard (impossible ?) to beat. I've never had a problem with any solar-powered watch retaining a charge in Ireland, once it was worn/exposed to sunlight regularly. They really don't need anything beyond being worn, regardless of the fact that the sun is not necessarily splitting the stones 365 days a year here.

And there's plenty of options at various price points.

Right well I guess thats it settled then. Citizen eco drive it is then.

Also, if its not going to break any rules or anything, can anyone recommend any decent sites to buy from?

creationwatches.com seem to get good mentions on this forum. I've never used them myself....yet:)
