    Hello all,

Back story is that I am due on a boat in the morning to move to the UK for work and after topping up the engine with oil I switched it on and there is a scary noise!!

All I did was top up the around 500ml of oil from a new container.

Below is a recording of the startup, I dare not to do it again hence my quick shut off.

    MP3 Link.

Any help and assistance is appreciated as I am effing snookered if the engine would be damaged by running. (hence nervous smileys etc.)

    Thanks all!

Not quite sure if that's a variation on the sticky solenoid 'yahoo', but all VAG cars are prone to this.

Is that actually coming from the rocker area? I think not.
Your battery seems to be weak enough perhaps its the bearing or clutch on the alternator. You could try a small squirt of water on it. Sounds a bit tinny for a belt slipping

I am just off the phone to Tadhg at our friends at Daltons and he said that it sounded like a starter motor sticking and that I should push though the fear of odd sounding loud things and keep it running for a few seconds and sure enough it stopped. As a sound tech you would think I would be used to fighting through odd sounding loud things. :o

Anyway, the starter motor did stick on just the once a number of years ago causing a great juddering, as if it was fully engaged but this sounded different.

Lets hope that its not too early to say PHEW!

Yeah, I have taken battery measurements before and it is on the weaker side of okay, though its always has a slow start when the engine is cold. A couple of minutes running and she switches on instantly for the rest of the day.

From how it started it would appear that either the battery, as I said before, or your starter is weak.
When travelling in the UK make sure you are on a hill before you switch the engine off. Better still get it checked before you go
Out posts crossed there. Best of luck with it, though I would change the battery. Not worth taking the chance when travelling, especially anyplace in the UK . Would cost a fortune to get going again
