Got in to this guy there recently.

His "Polity" series is excellent, set about 800 years in the future, where humanity is governed by super powerful AIs.

The series follows an agent with the main security service, some cool weaponry, big ass ships, nasty nanotech and serious violence.

    Its great fun.

He's pretty active on twitter as well @nealasher and will always reply, which is nice

    Well worth a look

Read nearly everything he's published so far. They're, for the large part, great fun for the reasons you mentioned plus some really nasty and innovative aliens. Asher's mind is brilliantly warped here with their life cycles and the fact that they're beasts you don't want to ever mess with.

There's the main line of Polity books plus a few one offs and the Spatterjay series all set in the same universe at different points in its history (e.g. the Spatterjay sequence is centuries after the Polity series).

I've only read the first book of the Owner series, which mcgovern is referencing. It wasn't up to the standard of the rest but I'll still finish it.

Best news is though the next trilogy is back to the Polity 'verse and will feature Penny Royal who is a rogue AI featuring in the excellent "The Technician". Looking forward to that.

For those fans here, bad news has hit Neal. His wife has just passed away according to his blog so understandably it may take some time for him to be in a position to write again. Poor guy.
