    HI Guys,

    See attached photo. Trying to take out the crankset, I can loosen the inner bolt with a 8mm allen key but then it gets real tight as I try and loosen it further (its probably a locking bolt). I presume that I need to take the out the ring first with the small circular holes in it.

    Anybody know the tool needed for this is ?

    Thanks Paul.

    That is a self extracting crankbolt it will get tight when trying to loosen as you are using the centre bolt to lever off the crankarm. If if is really stuck you can remove the outer ring with a pin spanner;

    You will then be able to get a normal crank puller onto the threads to remove the crankarm.

    Thanks for that, I had been afraid to use too much force but I gather from what you are saying I can try and lever it off with just the center bolt and if that fails I can get buy the pin spanner and try the second approach.

    Self extracting crank bolts are notorious for destroying crank threads. Use some needle nose pliers to unscrew the outer nut and use a regular crank puller.

    Thanks guys, was being a wuss, it just needed steady pressure to get it off. The fact that it was first loose first and then got tighter as I continued to turn made me afraid of shearing.

    Anyway upshot is have the old system off and can now use the power meter on the winter bike as well :-)
