    Hi all,

It's a good few years since I've built a PC, I've been using a cheap Dell for a few years but it's time to go back to a proper decent custom built PC. There's 3 main uses that I have in mind:

1 Media PC: This is going to be hooked up to my TV for movies/music etc. So being relatively quiet would be nice. More important is sound, I have a Creative X-Fi PCIe card that I bought a while back, but couldn't fit in my current system, I really want to use this now. I had an Audigy 2ZS years ago that I loved and want to get back to having a dedicated sound card. Also, my crappy HT system only has optical in so I'll need the optical out on the X-Fi.

2 Development Server: I'd like to be able to run some Hyper V virtual machines along with Visual Studio. Ideally I'd want 16GB of RAM for this, but RAM seems really overpriced at the moment so my plan is to get by with 8GB for the moment and then add either another 8GB or maybe another 16GB down the line.

3 Gaming: I'm not in a rush for this, I've plenty of Xbox 360 games in my queue still, but I'd like to have a decent machine for Star Citizen and the Oculus Rift down the line, so I'm thinking of adding a decent GPU later in the year. For the time being, I have an old Nvidia GT240 I'm planning to use to help with media playing.

    So, onto the formalities

    1. What is your budget?
    €500

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Media/Software Dev/Star Citizen/Oculus Rift

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Hard drive / GT240

    5. Do you need a monitor? No
5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? 1920x1080 / No

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

    8. How can you pay? Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser

    9. When are you purchasing? Next few days

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Should be able to manage / South Dublin City

I've put together the following build:
    Item|Price
AMD FX-8320 Prozessor, Boxed, Sockel AM3+|€129.67
    MSI 970A-G43, AMD Sockel AM3+, ATX, DDR3|€57.63
    8GB-Kit G.Skill Sniper PC3-14900U CL9-10-9-28|€68.15
    BitFenix Merc Beta|€34.21
    be quiet! SYSTEM POWER 7 500W - bulk -|€55.61
Samsung SSD 840 EVO Basic 120GB SATA 6Gb/s|€82.99
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - Intel/AMD|€30.23
    Total build cost| €458.49 + €30 shipping

I've included a CPU cooler, mostly to try and keep things a little quieter. I'll probably do a little basic overclocking, but won't be pushing things to their limits.

Does the above look pretty reasonable, is there anything else in the same price region I should be looking at instead?

Also, any other suggestions on the case, I just picked that because it was cheap and I saw it mentioned here on a few builds, but I'd pay a little more for something better, especially if it was much better on the noise front?

    Thanks in advance,
    Steve.
